Sushi in NYC usually falls into two distinct categories. 1. Cheap, inauthentic sushi from Asian owners capitalizing on America's obsession with the most amazing of Japanese culinary exports. 2. Amazing and amazingly expensive sushi made with ingredients flown in from Japan by extremely well trained sushi chefs.
Tanoshi is closest to the latter, because much of the fish is from Japan and because the owner is a very experienced sushi chef who has worked in both in Japan and at high end sushi restaurants in NYC. Where Tanoshi differs is that the price is surprisingly affordable thanks to the BYOB policy and fair omakase (chefs choice) price ($90 last time I visited).
The restaurant is counter only and omakase only though you can add pieces if still hungry. Even with some supplements the meal is relatively affordable.
Ask to be on the chef's side of the restaurant (there are 2 counters in adjacent storefronts) and enjoy a conversation with Oona Tempest, the only American female sushi chef in NYC. She's very friendly and knowledgeable.
Tonight at Uminoie we will have a special premium (it even says it on the box!) rice shochu from Kumamoto ($15/glass - and ALL proceeds will go to charity). We will also have special limited edition shochu tenugui available for purchase with a portion of proceeds going to earthquake relief! Unfortunately the Kumamon bobble head and Kiji-uma will not be available, though they will visit. 7-10pm.
