best omakase!!!

What I would do to have this premium #sushi course @zumanewyork again! Served as our ninth course out of a 16 course #omakase meal, it was definitely the star of the show. This is definitely a decadent meal and a perfect place to celebrate a special occasion! Or just to go for dinner on a Wednesday for a baller meal.

Zuma BRUNCH

    • 4.6
  • Food: 5.0
  • Service: 5.0
  • Decor: 3.0
  • Meal Price: $100 - $199

I finally tried Zuma's brunch and I absolutely loved it.

Eggs, pancakes, waffles, sausage, cereal, and yogurt are all things you will NOT find at this brunch. This is all about modern Japanese cuisine. If that's not your type of cuisine, don't even bother coming here. If it is, you cannot live another second without trying it. I was very hesitant to try it because of it's hype. A lot of places have let me down when they are so popular, but not Zuma.

Here's how it works. You must make a reservation. Outside seating is available and can be very nice depending on the weather. Make sure to request it upon reserving if you want it. There is a menu with three categories: $95, $135 and $395. Yes, I know, it's very expensive. All of the categories include all you can drink signature martinis, sake, bloody marts, bellinis, mimosas, sangria, ice tea and lemonade. I had a spicy bloody Mary which was great and then moved on to cold sake.

There are 3-4 different entrees to choose from within each price category. Each menu also includes unlimited champagne of either: Louis Roederer Brut Reserve NV or a Dom Perignon Brut 2002 (for the $395 menu of course). I chose the $95 menu and the salmon teriyaki. My husband chose the black cod from the $135 menu. No one in our party did the third menu. Each table also receives a mushroom and Japanese vegetables hot pot. It is steamed table side and served piping hot. EVERYTHING WAS DELICIOUS! (In case you were wondering, the $395 menu includes either prime beef rib eye with fresh truffle, lobster tempura, jumbo tiger prawn or the black cod. The table side hot pot also includes shaved black truffles as well as the aforementioned 2002 Dom Perignon.)

We placed the orders for our main entrees and headed to the buffet. The buffet is also included in the price of the courses. Everything is put out in small quantities and quickly replenished. The second the last of something disappears, someone is there ready with new ones. Nothing sits for a very long time. There, you find endless options of mostly asian style seafood, vegetables, and several beef and chicken too. I loved the Japanese sweet potato, ceviche, thinly sliced octopus, oysters, and the sushi (especially the addicting jalapeño yellowtail snapper roll). I refuse to admit just how many yellowtail rolls I had. Nope, not spilling it. There was another standout: THE ZUMA CROQUETTE! I had three of them. THREE! I'm not sure what's inside but it's a mix of mashed potatoes, wasabi, and soy. The outside was perfectly breaded and fried golden. Going through withdrawals right about now!

At some point, I made myself stop eating because we still had not even received our entrees. Once those came, we were beyond pleased. The portions were great, cooked beautifully and plated nicely. I looked at it and wondered just how I would be able to eat more. I will say that I took most of my salmon home because I could not fit another morsel. Now if I was only allowed to take some of those croquettes home...hmmmm

Once we finished, we realized we had not seen a dessert menu yet. Before I could inquire about it, our waitress brought over the dessert platter. It is served family style and is a collection of sorbets, fruits, cakes and ice cream. It is sized per table. The table of 8 next to us got a giant one.

What? I said I couldn't fit in another morsel of food. Dessert is not food. There is a different compartment in our bodies for dessert! Right? Although I'm more of an obnoxiously-decadent-type-of-desserts girl, this was good and I enjoyed it. It went perfectly with the rest of the "food." The mango sorbet was my favorite.

Decor was very modern. Service was great and very professional. My napkin was folded each time I stepped away from the table and dirty plates cleared promptly. The crowd was very mixed. There were a lot of tourists along with locals. It is very child friendly as well. Zuma is supposed to have a dress code. That might be the case for dinner. During brunch, you had most people dressed nicely and then a good number (mostly men) underdressed in shorts and tees. Anything goes. They were extremely busy the entire time I was there.

For the record, I did not think it was pretentious at all. In fact, I think it was beyond casual. I experienced amazing food in a laid back environment. I was also able to take as many photos as I wanted without being told not to. Perhaps they are stricter for dinner? Whatever the case, I am now a Zuma convert. I plan to return as often as I can!

Dinner, you are up next...

Fantastic dinning!!

This is one of my favorite restaurants. It's not an authentic Japanese place but they have a really good sense of arranging Japanese to make it modern.

Champagne and Caviar Dinner at Zuma Miami

Brace yourself, cuz it is about to get real fancy below. Champagne and Caviar, the culinary foundation of the affluent.  Twas honored to be invited by Champagne Taittinger (super cool website worth clicking on) for an indulgent night of overflowing bubbly and decadent cuisine at Zuma Miami.

Champagne Taittinger is one of the last family-owned and operated grand marque Champagne Houses in the world. The selection they shared that night was beyond superb. The sumptuous caviar was provided by Black River Caviar. In true Miami fashion we were doing fat bumps of caviar (pictured above), snorting is not recommended.

I knew virtually nothing about the intricacies and art of  Champagne and Caviar until this wonderful evening. Growing grapes is an art form. The diligence and deft required in nurturing, experimenting and harvesting make some noticeable and subtle differences in illustrious champagne.

IMG_0060

My absolute fave of the night was the Champagne Taittinger Nocturne Sec “City Lights” 12.3% ABV  /  $79.99 “A blend of more than 35 different crus from a variety of harvests, this wine spends four years on the lees before being disgorged. A 18 g/l dosage of cane sugar combined with the slow cellar aging creates a round, mellow, smooth Champagne that is perfect to enjoy with a dessert or late in the evening. 40% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir, 25% Pinot Meunier.”

City Lights is bursting with flavor and seductively smooth. The combination these master champagne mixologists created was instantly catapulted to my favorite champagne. Already thinking about how many cases the robots are going to have to serve at my distant future wedding.

IMG_0061

The other bottle that tantalized my mouth was a pricey one. Champagne Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Rosé 2006  12.5% ABV  /  $261.99 “The Comtes Rosé is made from 100% Grand Cru grapes and produced only in exceptional years. The Chardonnay (30%) grapes come from the most renowned vineyards of the prestigious Côte des Blancs, and the Pinot Noir (70%) from the Montagne de Reims. Only juice from the first pressing is used in order to ensure the structure and long aging potential that is so essential to this exceptional Champagne. 12% of the Pinot Noir is blended in as still red wine.”

I do generally prefer Rose to Champagne (before City Lights became the exception) and this Rose was stupendous. 2006 seems to be a solid year and the Rose was not too sweet or tart, A nice balance of smooth and prestige taste. Plus pink just make me feel like we are having a way prettier celebration.

Zuma delivered an enjoyably ostentatious meal. My favorite course of the night was the Tuna and Salmon Tartar with Rice Crackers and Black River Caviar Oscietra. I am not the biggest fan of plain caviar, but when they paired it with tuna and salmon it was remarkable. The rich & fatty textures of the fish paired marvelously with the Prélude Grands Crus,  because the Côte des Blancs Chardonnay introduces a level of acidity to the flavor spectrum, which created a harmonious balance.

The dinner was a jubilant affair. A sterling combination of education, scrumptiousness, fanciness and even a hug chain around the table I induced. Whether you are a Champagne and Caviar newbie or pro, delving into Champagne Taittinger & Black River Caviar will delight foodie mouths across the board.
