Located in the Gaslamp Quarter of downtown San Diego, Werewolf is a bar serving 'new American' style food.  Many come adorned with an egg and or pork belly.  If you want a hamburger, you can get one that comes with both an egg and pork belly.  If you want Kimchi Fried Rice, that comes with an egg and pork belly.  Or if you are craving Benedict for breakfast, this naturally come ON a pork belly with an egg on it.

Werewolf

The food is geared towards appetizers, burgers and sandwiches.  I had their Triple Threat burger.  The egg on top made it too messy for my taste.  I had to eat much of it with a fork so as not to get egg on my fingers.

Werewolf

Decor is hip and modern and the staff is friendly.  This part of San Diego can get crazy depending on the events going on downtown, so keep that in mind.  Oh, watch out - the bathroom is unisex.

The compote mixed perfectly with the garlic aioli, a hint of spice with sweet was delectable! .5 Definitely try this burger if you are in San Diego! #SanDiego #SanDiegoEats #SanDiegoFood #SanDiegoBurger #SanDiegoRestaurants #FullBoar #Food #Foodie #FoodPorn #FirstTimer #GarlicFries #GarlicAioli #Greens #GasLamp #Sisters #Burger #Eat #EatThis #Explore #Winter #WeekendTrip #Happy #Hangry #Holiday #Holidays2015 #Restaurant #Jalapeo #JalapenoBlackberryCompote #Delicious #LatePost

Werewolf

We stumbled upon Werewolf after a visiting Canadian friend raved about her experience. Her story involved a great time, tasty food, happy hour specials, and 66% off. We’d be happy with all of those individually, but all at once? This was too good to be true. An immediate investigation had to commence.

Werewolf

The bar up front when you walk in is simple, with flat screens lined up for your viewing pleasure. However, what follows throughout the bar/restaurant is sensory overload in the best sense possible.

Werewolf

Werewolf

Werewolf

An art piece high above that reads “shots” made out of bullets? Werewolf comics adhered to the walls? An “It’s Pat” homage on the bathroom doors? Need I say more. I can see why our friend loved the place, and we had yet to take our first bite, Werewolf style.

Werewolf

I even liked the front of their menu. Come on dude.

Werewolf

Werewolf

They had a few main categories like salads, burgers, sandwiches, and plates. Anh had her eyes set on the Foghorn sandwich while our server led me to the Beef Short Ribs plate.

Werewolf

The Foghorn came with chicken, cheddar cheese, crispy onions, chimichurri sauce, tomato, and a charred scallion creme. The burgers and sandwiches also come with standard fries. You can upgrade them for a small charge. Everything rubbed me the right way except the onion rings. They just didn’t do much for me in the form of taste or texture. If they didn’t fall out after a few bites, I might have not noticed them. Aside from that, all of the components came together into a nice bite. Maybe I’m going light on the description because Anh scarfed it down before I could get a few bites in. Must have been good!

Werewolf

Many restaurants serve a beef short rib entree. Many restaurants I leave thinking meh, why did I order that forgetful dish? After I effortlessly pulled a piece of Werewolf’s short rib and placed it into my mouth, I had to stop and think…did I just eat an above average beef short rib? Wait a minute. How above average is this? Way above average, right? Yes! Way above average, up up up there I must say. Not only that, but the brussel sprouts weren’t oily, didn’t have bacon, and didn’t have an entire salt shaker dispensed on top!? Holy crap. Add this to the list, pronto. If you haven’t gathered already, we like this place. Dare I say it has become our new favorite gaslamp location. It shines bright like a full moon, giving us something to howl about. Woooooo!

Werewolf

They have other specials throughout the week, but this Sunday one is crazy. Remember that 66% I was talking about earlier? You get two dice to roll. She rolled two sixes and got 66% off her bill. I think she paid maybe $8 total for a meal and a drink. Note: please read the fine print.

werewolf american pub / downtown san diego

Jake’s birthday is approximately 20 days before mine. We don’t always celebrate on his actual birthday though since S’s birthday is on the 2nd and he doesn’t want to steal his thunder. Instead we celebrated after his actual day. I made the whole thing a “Surprise! Woohoo!” evening and didn’t tell him where we were going. Jake’s mom graciously dropped us off Downtown as I had arranged transport home through Blacklane. Our first stop: dinner at Werewolf American Pub.

Vigo at Werewolf American Pub - San Diego, CA

I didn’t know anything about Werewolf before we headed down there. What I did know is that it had a kickass name and was just a couple of blocks from our final destination for the evening. Werewolf is located right next to the Haunted Hotel so for Halloween they were going with a “Haunted Lobby” theme with all the wait staff dressed up like French maids and bellhops.

What I did notice right away was that huge painting of Vigo the Carpathian!

Ray: You think there’s a connection between this Vigo character and the… slime?
Egon: Is the atomic weight of cobalt 58.9?

Yesssssss.

Also, that decor that says “Shots”? It’s made with bullets.

Ballast Point Yellowtail and Storm Trooper drink at Werewolf in San Diego, CA

[yellowtail and a storm trooper / $6.75 and $10]

The other fun thing about Werewolf? They had a rum based drink called a Storm Trooper (basically a “Dark and Stormy” but geekier) which I felt was perfect for my Star Wars lovin’ boyfriend. They served it in a glass beaker (!) with a garnish of candied ginger that Jake tried to get me to eat (no, thanks). Jake forgot to stir the drink first to mix it so his first sip reaction was pretty classic. Heh heh.

Grilled Garlic Ginger Wings at Werewolf in San Diego, CA

[grilled garlic ginger wings / 10 for $10.95]

Jake and I shared two appetizers and split a burger for our meal. I love splitting food. That way you get to try more goodies!

Our first dish were Werewolf’s Grilled Garlic Ginger Wings. These had an excellent outer crispiness and a ton of flavor from the marinade that the wings hang out in. The ginger gives these a great boost of flavor and I love that they’re not fried. I love grilling wings at home so I was excited to see a grilled version out a restaurant instead of another fried wing.

Papas Potato Balls at Werewolf in San Diego

[papas balls / $5.95]

On their menu they also refer to these as “Werewolf Hushpuppies” but actually they’re mashed potato based and not cornbread based. In addition to the mashed potato, there’s bacon, scallions and cilantro and they’re topped with cotija cheese and a spicy house sauce.

Papas Potato Balls - Inside

Here’s a peek at the ball’s innards. You can see bits of herbs and the bacon hiding out in there. I wasn’t a huge fan of the house sauce which just tasted like spiciness to me, but I enjoyed the balls themselves. There’s a slight outer crunch and the inside is soft and warm with lots of bits of flavor from the herbs and bacon.

Triple Threat Burger with Maple Glazed Pork Belly at Werewolf in San Diego

[triple threat burger / $12.95]

Jake and I were split between the Pork Belly Cubano and the Triple Threat Burger and our waiter told us the burger was his favorite item on the menu. We decided to trust him and ordered that. The Triple Threat is a burger that’s piled with a 1/3lb beef patty, maple glazed pork belly, a fried egg, greens (peeking in there at the very bottom) and a blue cheese aioli. Whoa. It was a lot.

The burger itself was really tasty – very juicy, cooked to medium rare – but I found the pork belly to be incredibly salty. Which is a shame because it was so tender and seemed like it would have great melt-in-your-mouth appeal, but I didn’t want it to melt in my mouth because it felt like I was chewing on a salt lick. Once I removed the pork belly (and the egg because, well, you know me and eggs) I liked it a lot better. If they toned down the salt I’m sure it would be much more enjoyable and it was probably just some weird overly salty fluke.

French Fries at Werewolf in San Diego

The burger came with a little bowl of perfectly crisp golden french fries. Nothing out of the ordinary, but enjoyable enough.

After we paid the bill, we were chatting with our waiter about Werewolf and he started telling us about Comic Con and what it was all about. I interrupted him and said, “Oh yeah, we know about Comic Con, we’re from here! We’re locals, we’re here celebrating his birthday.”

To which our waiter said, “Why didn’t you tell me?! Hang on. Stay there. I’ll be right back.”

Jake kind of glared at me at this point and I giggled. We could sense SOMETHING was coming.

Our waiter came back with this:

Chocolate Bundt Cake + a shot at Werewolf in San Diego, CA

AN ENTIRE CAKE. WHAT.

Not only that, but there was a shot of Fireball Whiskey is the middle!

And then our super cool waiter got the attention of the whole restaurant.

Uh oh.

Jake gave me another look at this point and I just kept grinning.

Our waiter got the whole restaurant to sing to an embarrassed Jake. Heehee!

Here’s Jake before he slung back his shot of whiskey.

Mary has a bite of cake

And here’s me having a bite of his yummy chocolate bundt cake! I couldn’t believe they gave him the WHOLE cake. Most places will just give you a slice, but damn, I was impressed with Werewolf after that! Cheers to Werewolf for being so awesome and making Jake feel more special on his birthday!

Boomers Musical - San Diego, CA

After Werewolf, we walked down to the Horton Grand Theater. I was taking him out to see Boomers, a musical about the baby boomer generation which featured TONS of music from the 50’s to the 70’s. They do lots of snippets of little songs while re-telling part of the history of the baby boomer generation which was great fun.

After the show, we got a sweet ride in a Mercedes-Benz 500 thanks to Blacklane. It was a cozy, cool ride with a very friendly driver. It was a great night overall and I was so happy to take Jake out to celebrate his birthday.

Werewolf – Gaslamp, Downtown San Diego

Werewolf

What a cool name.  Werewolf!

P1240006

Werewolf is right in the heart of the Gaslamp district of downtown San Diego.  Inside is a quaint and energetic bar & grill that is sure to appeal to many.

Service this evening was awesome and we were tended to by no less than 4 people… all who had different food recommendations.  

But, it was primarily Jason and Nick who helped us out this evening.

P1240013

At least there was consensus amongst everyone to order the wings.  These bad boys are prep’d with lots of love.  After being marinated, they are baked, then flash fried, and finally charred on the grill.  Whhaaaat??

P1240016

You can actually make out the char on this picture.

The wings were sweet and savory.  It came with the perfect spicy aioli dipping sauce.

P1240044

We also got an order of the bulgogi nachos.

Honestly, they were just okay, so you’d be better served by getting 2 orders of wings.

P1240020

I was feeling like something a bit different tonight, so the Full Boar (pork burger) caught my eye.

P1240031

I was really glad to chose this one.  It was perfectly cooked medium to medium well and it had a sweet spicy jalapeno blackberry jelly which was memorable.

P1240022

It comes with a side order of fries, garlic fries, sweet potato fries, or brussel sprouts.

I chose the garlic fries which came out nice and hot!

P1240035

Darren opt’d for a classic burger with an egg on top.

P1240038

This was another excellent choice.  The runny egg was fabulous (minus have to pick it up with my fingers… I don’t care for sticky fingers!).

Even you’re even more daring, you can get the Triple Threat which is this burger plus maple glazed pork belly!

P1240010P1240009P1240008

The Menu is simple but intriguing.  Next time we return, I’ll have to try out their Foghorn, or the Sweet Dee’s Steak & Cheese.

Werewolf Drinks

As you know, we’re not big drinkers, but I’m sure you’ll find something you like to drink here.

P1240048

They had a fun karaoke night this Tuesday that we visited.  Nick belted it out the first song in great style!

All in all, great service, great food, and lots of fun.  They also have an all you can eat tacos special on Tuesdays!  From what we could tell it was pretty popular.

Definitely, check out Werewolf the next time you’re in Gaslamp.  You won’t be disappointed.
