Pizzeria Uno | Chicago, IL
The Pizzeria Uno that I visited in downtown Chicago was the birthplace of Chicago-style deep dish pizza, and following is its history as described on Uno’s website:
“In 1943, when Ike Sewell opened a restaurant at the corner of Ohio Street and Wabash Avenue in Chicago, Americans ate pizza primarily as a snack. Ike figured that if you combined some of Italy’s old, authentic recipes with impressive quantities of the finest meats, fresh cheeses, ripe vegetables and flavorful spices, pizza would become a hearty meal. It was the start of an American tradition – the Chicago Deep Dish Pizza. Ike’s Original Deep Dish Pizza has been imitated many times, but never quite duplicated.”
I am guessing that this location is still its original size as it is pretty small, so you should be prepared to wait if necessary. However, like most of Chicago’s pizzerias, Uno’s allows you to place your pizza order while you wait so that they can start cooking it. Additionally, there is a Pizzeria Duo a mere block away, that I assume they opened up to help keep up with demand. It was very exciting to visit the original Pizzeria Uno, but their pizza tasted fairly similiar to their franchises throughout a lot of the country. It was certainly still very good, and I would say that Pizzeria Uno is the best option for deep dish pizza in almost every city they are located in, just not Chicago anymore in my opinion.
