First Time in Chicago

    • 3.6

I had pizza here about a year ago and it was not disappointing. It still is one of the most filling meals I think I have ever had and the prices were alright. The service was my favorite part, the staff was very friendly and helpful! I would go again.

Uno

The Pizzeria Uno that I visited in downtown Chicago was the birthplace of Chicago-style deep dish pizza, and following is its history as described on Uno’s website:

“In 1943, when Ike Sewell opened a restaurant at the corner of Ohio Street and Wabash Avenue in Chicago, Americans ate pizza primarily as a snack. Ike figured that if you combined some of Italy’s old, authentic recipes with impressive quantities of the finest meats, fresh cheeses, ripe vegetables and flavorful spices, pizza would become a hearty meal. It was the start of an American tradition – the Chicago Deep Dish Pizza. Ike’s Original Deep Dish Pizza has been imitated many times, but never quite duplicated.”

I am guessing that this location is still its original size as it is pretty small, so you should be prepared to wait if necessary. However, like most of Chicago’s pizzerias, Uno’s allows you to place your pizza order while you wait so that they can start cooking it. Additionally, there is a Pizzeria Duo a mere block away, that I assume they opened up to help keep up with demand. It was very exciting to visit the original Pizzeria Uno, but their pizza tasted fairly similiar to their franchises throughout a lot of the country.  It was certainly still very good, and I would say that Pizzeria Uno is the best option for deep dish pizza in almost every city they are located in, just not Chicago anymore in my opinion.

Fantastic pizza! I'm a fan for life. I only visit Chicago once a year or so, but I always try to make time for Uno's. There is no other Uno's that can compare to the Chicago original. The pizza is deep dish, but the crust is still chewy and delicious. Not at all greasy like some other deep-dish pizzas can be. Like another reviewer said, there is usually a wait, but nothing too bad. It's a casual environment with booths that still feel private even when it's busy. Service is friendly and fast and they're very knowledgeable about their pizza, which that have tons of options for.

Probably the best Chicago style pizza you will ever sink you teeth into. The restaurant is exactly what you might expect for a chain in the Chicago area, but that doesn't take away from the great food. The deep dish with sauce on the top is absolutely delicious and is a great way to warm up during the cold winter months of Chicago. If you're in town and want a laid back place to eat with fantastic Chicago style pizza, then this is the place to go.

This is a famous Chicago-area pizzaria. I've been about 3-5 times, and it is consistently great, delicious deep dish pizza. Beware of the long wait time, especially near heavy travel seasons (start of the semesters, thanksgiving, winter holiday). You'll probably have to make reservations, but they are well worth it. It's a quaint, place with plenty of pizza choices.

I have been to Uno several times, and I just don't get it. Is the pizza good? Yes. Is it good enough to even be discussed with some of the best pizza in Chicago? No. It's like they became popular and then stopped trying. The food is good but not anything special. The restaurant is small and cramped. The prices are so-so. I will say that I have always had good service. All in all, good, not great pizza.

This is my go-to pizza place whenever I'm visiting family in Chicago. Nothing, literally nothing compares to Uno's deep dish pizza. I love the low-key pizza joint vibe of Uno's -- and just thinking about their fresh tangy tomato sauce makes my mouth water. Service is usually good, even when they're busy. They also have frozen pizzas available -- when I was pregnant and craving deep dish, my sister brought me one on the train from Chicago -- heated in the oven it was almost as good as fresh!
