THE MERMAID INN BDF: 7/10 Cute fries from the even cuter named oyster bar. These fries were coated in a slightly spicy dusting which was easily and beautifully washed down with a swig of Mermaid Pilsner. Oh and some oysters. They were served nice and hot and although not as crunchy as I might have liked, were basically demolished within 7 minutes of arrival. Go get 'em c

Happy Hour at Mermaid Inn, East Village

mermaid_inn_east_village_happy_hour_nyc-7

Perhaps New York City’s most Googled phrase is: best happy hour with food nyc. A quick search will yield this article from Gothamist first, aptly titled “10 Best Happy Hours with Food in NYC.” First on that list, is Mermaid Inn. So perhaps it should come as little surprise that this is exactly where we headed Wednesday at exactly 5pm sharp.

Now, you may notice something strange is afoot. I’m not in Paris, and I’m resorting to Google to tell me where the best places are in the city. Well, I haven’t been in New York City for two years at this point. As for Paris, ma nouvelle maison, my visa expired, so I’m back. Hope you missed me.

I was walking down Seventh Avenue for all of thirty five seconds yesterday, when an unidentified liquid dripped on my face. Don’t you hate when that happens? Immediately I started questioning all my life’s decisions which had lead me to this point. Two minutes later, when the exact same thing happened, I merely brushed it off and scoffed to myself. I guess it took only that much time to become a seasoned New Yorker again.

So what about Mermaid Inn?

I wanted to love it, and I may return to try to love it again sometime in the near future. But we left feeling a little apathetic, and here’s why.

The food definitely tastes as good as it looks in the photos. It was fresh, well-seasoned, and served with grace. The raw bar options for happy hour are dollar oysters and clams. Those were the best part of the happy hour, in my opinion. The other items were really good, but simply too small for the price. The fish tacos should have been a bit larger, and the ‘fried oyster,’ is literally one oyster. I wish the waitress had corrected me, when I clearly ordered “the fried oysters.” She should have told me it was just one, and that felt shifty to me, like she knew and felt guilty about it.

The wine pours are generous, and the fortune fish with your check was entertaining, though my forecast was a grim one. I’ll have to come back here for dinner sometime, when normal prices yield normal portions. If you’re heading here for happy hour, stick with the raw bar, and you can’t go wrong. The ambiance is very nice, especially in the outdoor garden.

We swung by Mermaid Inn last week to indulge in their seafood happy hour.  I usually order the $1 oysters but decided to switch it up with some Littleneck Clams.

Mr. T went his usual route with a piping hot basket of Fried Calamari...

...then we split their delicious Lobster Sandwich with lots of mayo and super skinny fries.  I love how the Mermaid Inn always splits the dish for you...it saves me from trying to sneak the bigger piece:)

A meal at the Mermaid Inn is never complete without a free cup of chocolate pudding and the little fish fortune teller.

As usual Mr. T's fish flopped around in his hand while mine laid there dead.  I have no idea why those things never work for me.

Mermaid Inn is always a great choice for Happy Hour and for this week only it's been extended.  Starting tomorrow Happy Hour will run from 4:00-7:00 in the East Village... a whole extra hour to get happy!

The Mermaid Inn – East Village

The Mermaid Inn is a cozy seafood restaurant with locations in the East Village, West Village, and Upper West Side. Every day there is a “Happy Hour and a Half” from 5:30 to 7pm at the bar and in the dining room. I was off from work this week, so I was able to arrive a little after 5:30pm to get started. The “Happy Hour and a Half” features wine, beer, and a few specialty cocktails as well as an assortment of small plates, including the mini clam chowder (rich and creamy), mermaid lobster sliders (fresh and buttery), shrimp corn dogs, and fried calamari. We ordered all of the above plus the smoked gouda mac & cheese (delicious) and fried brussels sprouts with bacon (I love brussels sprouts). The service was friendly, the host was super sweet, and the food was yummy — overall, a great spot!

Great Oyster Happy Hour @ The Mermaid Inn

Believe it or not, I have a bad habit of going back to the same restaurants over and over again. I know, I know, what kind of food blogger am I when there are so many new places to explore and try in the city? So this spring, J and I are making a commitment to step out of our comfort zone and try more new places more often.

Since it's finally getting warmer, I'm trying to be less of a homebody and there's nothing that can get me out of the apartment faster than the promise of a good happy hour.

The Mermaid Inn

The Mermaid Inn has been on top of my happy hour lists for a while now. I love me some $1 oysters, and Mermaid Inn has other good eats available during their daily happy hours: 5-7pm Monday to Friday, and 4-7pm Saturday & Sunday.

One Sunday Afternoon, we headed over to the Mermaid Inn in the East Village to meet up with a friend. At 5:30, the place was filling up with just a table left for us.

The Mermaid Inn

I was actually pleasantly surprised by the maritime decor that made the place feel a chic yet homey, if that's possible. Then the waitress placed down THE BEST everything bagel flatbread crackers that made me throw any "eat less white flour" resolution out the window.

Turns out, you can get it in some gourmet food stores and even on Amazon!

The Mermaid Inn

We proceeded to order a few cocktails (loved their Dark & Stormy's), two dozens of oysters and clams as well as a few other appetizers. I've been craving clam chowder and their $3 bowls of it was enough to just give me a taste of it without the guilt.

Of all the appetizers, we liked the fish tacos the most. Fresh grilled fish with an awesome guac & creamy spicy sauce to top it. We found the fried calamari over breaded and fried for a tad long, would personally skip next time.

The shrimp corndogs were cute but not necessary. Personally I'd double up on more oysters and the fish tacos.

The Mermaid Inn

Our happy hour ended with complimentary chocolate puddings which was just heavenly and their Fortune Teller Miracle Fish - a cute way to end our happy hour.

All in all, The Mermaid Inn met my expectations for a relaxing happy hour filled with good eats, great atmosphere that was very comfortable and not crowded and loud (does that make me sound old? lol). I would easily go back with a small group of friends to enjoy.

They have 3 locations total, The Mermaid Inn in East Village and Upper West Side, and Mermaid Oyster Bar in Greenwich Village. If you've been thinking about going, don't wait as long as I did, go check it out!

Menu of The Mermaid Inn

Quick Summary

Food
Seafood is the name of the game for the Mermaid Inn. Located in East Village in NYC, this restaurant has a great happy hour with cheap oysters, cheap bites like lobster sliders, and cheap drinks. Other great bites include the lobster sandwich, which is light on mayo but heavy on the lobster chunks, and the fish tacos. Some felt that the food was a bit on the expensive side however.
Atmosphere
The Mermaid Inn is a trendy little space. The walls are lined with pictures, and there are many tables that seat just two people, making this a great casual date spot. It can get a bit noisy during happy hour as people pack into the restaurant, but generally the noise level is fairly average.
Service
The wait staff here is friendly and courteous, although during happy hour when things get a bit more hectic, service can become slower. Reviewers mention that the restaurant offers you a free mini dessert and a fun little fortune at the end of your meal.
