Delicious Meal at Siena Tavern

    • 5.0

I knew I wanted a good Italian meal, but it was difficult to narrow it down with so many options around the city. I kept hearing the same few recommendations and finally decided to try Siena Tavern. Located in the River North area and just around the corner from my hotel, this restaurant serves Traditional Italian food with a modern twist. It’s co-owned by “fan favorite” Top Chef, Fabio Viviani.

Siena Tavern

The upscale space is dimly lit with a bar and lounge. It was packed and fairly loud, but I didn’t mind at all. It was a bustling environment without the pretentious feel.

Siena Tavern

I highly recommend making a reservation which you can do online. I arrived for my 7:45pm reservation and was immediately seated at a high-top near the pizza and mozzarella bar area.

Siena Tavern

My waitress, Allison, was super nice and welcoming. She handed me the food and beverage menus and briefly went over them. She was very helpful and open to any questions.

Siena Tavern

The cocktails sounded great, but they had a nice selection of wines as well. I figured I start off with a glass. I asked Allison which wine she suggested and she delivered a nice earthy red.

Siena Tavern

There was one appetizer that really caught my attention. The Coccoli is crispy fried dough with stracchino cheese, prosciutto di parma, and truffle honey. How could I not try it? I was told I could order a half serving as well. Perfect!

Siena Tavern

The dough was crispy on the outside and light and airy inside. Stracchino cheese is a type of Italian cow’s milk cheese with a mild and delicate flavor. The salty prosciutto and sweet truffle honey went together very well, mixed that with the creamy cheese and you have a heavenly combination.

Siena Tavern

Just open up the crispy dough puff and stuff everything inside. Yep, just do it. It was yummy. Don’t skip this appetizer!

Siena Tavern

Everything on the menu sounded so good. I needed to decide what to have for my entrée. It was hard to ignore the homemade pastas. I couldn’t decide between a couple, but after some easy convincing from Allison I went with the Squid Ink Linguini…and I am so happy I did!

Siena Tavern

The dish is made with scratch made squid ink pasta, a spicy cream lobster sauce, green onions, and topped with a grilled lobster tail.

Siena Tavern

This dish was amazing! The sauce was so flavorful with a kick, but not too spicy. The pasta was perfectly cooked and there were generous chunks of tender lobster throughout. I had absolutely no problem finishing it. It’s on the heavy side, but soooo worth it!

Siena Tavern

I finished my wine and it was time to try a cocktail. I ordered the No. 1 – Absolut vodka, ginger zest, lemon, and sage tincture. It was light and refreshing.

Siena Tavern

The appetizer and pasta were so good, I had to take a peek at the dessert menu. Allison went over their most popular offerings and I could not pass up on the Coconut Orange Crème Brulee. The orange-flavored custard is topped with caramelized sugar and coconut whipped cream. It was creamy, slightly tart, and very good.

Siena Tavern

My dinner at Siena Tavern was wonderful. It’s easy to see why it was so packed. The coccoli were delicious and the squid ink pasta was super tasty. The service was incredible! I would love to come back to try their other dishes.

Revisiting Siena Tavern with Fabio Viviani

Siena Tavern

Over the last five plus years of compiling Chicago's ultimate brunch guide, Brandy has often been asked about her favorite brunch spots of all time.  While she has a stock of answers ready to go at all times, the constant questioning occasionally causes her to pause and think over all the various restaurants, bakeries, and coffee shops she's visited over the years.  "Its funny that some of those favorite simply don't exist any more or have become entirely new restaurants," Brandy often ponders, "But there are a handful that always immediately come to mind when I'm asked about my top picks, and if the memory of those meals can trump all the other clutter in my brain, they must really have been something special."

One of those places that makes Brandy's short list of all time favorites is most certainly Siena Tavern.  After

visiting the location

shortly after they began serving brunch, Brandy was incredibly impressed by the work of executive chef Fabio Viviani, who packed every plate full of bold, fresh flavors and well thought out presentations.  So when the opportunity came to not only return to the site of one of Brandy's most treasured brunch memories, but to meet Fabio in person as he guided her through a succession of new dishes and cocktails, Brandy could hardly turn the oppurtunity down.

Siena Tavern

Siena Tavern

The morning began, as every morning should, with a few cocktails.  First up was the Summer Spritz, a fruity concoction made with melon flavored vodka, aperol, citrus juices, and finished with prosecco, which Brandy found fresh and perfectly revitalizing.  After those cocktails had been consumed, the mimosa and bloody mary kits made an appearance.  Brandy especially liked the array of fresh fruit juices and purees available to mix into one's mimosa to make it a one of a kind breakfast beverage experience.

Siena Tavern

The first course was a taste of the Smoked Salmon Board.  As a play on a traditional lox plate, this one threw out the bagels and came in  instead with a "crispy dough" that resembled a cream puff shell as well as chive cream cheese, a little tomato, cucumber, capers, and red onion.  Never a huge fan of lox, Brandy was surprised by just how much she enjoyed the little bite, which was very tender and practically melted away on the tongue.  She especially enjoyed the buttery flavor of the crispy dough, which complimented the sharp veggies quite nicely.

Siena Tavern

Next up was the House Made Granola with fresh berries, Greek yogurt, and honey.  For such a simple dish, Brandy found that she really enjoyed each spoonful, delighting in the not-too-crunchy granola bits, which had just been barely touched with sweetness, combined with the silky smooth yogurt and the slightly tart berries.  "It's rather ingenious to make a sweet dish that is actually quite healthy for you," Brandy mused, "Helps to trick that nasty little sugar craving in the back of one's mind that insists on ordering lots of sugary things at the end of every meal."

Siena Tavern

The main course was the Italian themed house Benedict, made with a pesto hollandaise sauce, some crispy mortadella, and a base of toasted brioche.  Brandy really loved how different this benedict was to the traditional ones she sees about town, but she also appreciated that it didn't stray too far away from the basic formula of bread + ham + poached eggs + hollandaise.  "I always say that its not a brunch without at least one eggs benedict on the menu, and when you've got one this special, it certainly bodes well for everything else on offer."

Siena Tavern

Then came the sweets, represented by a plate of Tiramisu French Toast.  The buttery brioche had been soaked in espresso and then topped with a marsala whipped cream, fresh berries, and roasted white chocolate.  Brandy simply could not get enough of the little morsels of white chocolate on the plate, scooping up every tiny toasty bit.  The French toast had a lovely eggy texture to it and the fresh berries really helped to balance out the richer flavors.

Siena Tavern

Lastly, a sampling of house made sorbets came to the table in strawberry, mango peach, and grape.  Each one was simply made with just fresh fruit and water, making for bright and clean flavors that did the job of cleansing the palate nicely.  The only thing sweeter than the sorbets, in fact, was when Chef Viviani brought in his tiny sous chef in training, otherwise known as his son, Gage.

Siena Tavern

"I am glad that my memory isn't failing me after all and that Siena Tavern still deserves a place in my brunch Hall of Fame," Brandy commented as she leaned back in her chair, "Perhaps I should be revisiting my favorite spots a little more often.  After all, I wouldn't want to give anyone out dated information when I'm asked for brunching advice!"

Siena Tavern vs. Bar Siena

    • 4.5

By now you've probably been to or at least heard of Top Chef Fabio Viviani's Siena Tavern and Bar Siena. Both restaurants feature wonderful Italian dishes in unique settings. Siena Tavern, the older of the two restaurants, is situated in River North and features a large dining room and bar with an extensive list of cocktails, wines, and reserve wines. Bar Siena, the younger of the two restaurants which opened in July, is in the heart of restaurant row on Randolph Street in the West Loop. Bar Siena is two floors, with the first acting as a bustling bar area with an open kitchen, while the second level also offers a more traditional dining room. Bar Siena also has a walk-up window for its BomboBar, or dessert bar, featuring a selection of homemade bomboloni (Italian donuts), gelato, Italian ice, and coffee.

I'm reviewing both restaurants so you can compare them, but don't ask me to pick my favorite!

Siena Tavern

The BF and I stopped by Siena Tavern on a Thursday night and the place was hopping with a large corporate party in the bar, and a full dining room. Although we had a reservation, we had to wait about 15 minutes for a table.

We were seated next to the windows lining Hubbard Street which afforded us great people watching of those on the outdoor patio and passing by. I asked some friends for menu suggestions before our visit to Siena Tavern and the overlapping suggestion was the coccoli, crispy dough served with stracchino cheese, prosciutto di parma, and truffle honey. You pull the dough apart and top them with the meat and cheese, forming a mini sandwich. These dough balls were delish!

Siena Tavern

Coccoli

We passed on the selection of soups, salads and meat and cheese boards, in favor of some pizza and pasta. Our pizza choice was the carne pizza with housemade fennel sausage, pancetta cured bacon, sopressata, prosciutto sausage, mozzarella, tomato and fresh basil. This pizza was fully loaded and almost too pretty to eat. The crust was perfectly crispy yet chewy and the sauce and fresh basil were fantastic. We could have taken that pizza down, except we had to save room for some pasta.

Our pasta was equally heavy and meaty (go big or go home), a rigatoni with lamb amatriciana. Unfortunately, this dish is not on the menu. Chef Fabio was making it as a special the night we dined, but you might get lucky if you ask for it. It was perfection...I loved the housemade pasta and large chunks of lamb. This is the perfect dish for a nice big, bold glass of red wine.

Rigatoni with Lamb Amatriciana

Even though our previous three dishes all were carb-heavy, we somehow mentioned to save room for a monkeybread dessert. Yes, we're crazy. Yes, we love carbs. The dessert featured generous amounts of caramel, candied hazelnuts, and hazelnut whipped cream. Dessert is certainly not an afterthought here.

So, what are my thoughts overall? Honestly, I didn't expect much from a celebrity chef restaurant, but boy, was I blown away. Everything we ate packed a punch of flavor and we never wanted the dishes to end.
