Oxheart - Houston, TX

Ambiance:

This post is long overdue. I've been quite busy for the past couple of weeks, that I haven't had the time to dedicate to writing. But, I'm back with my recap of our dinner at Oxheart. A few weeks ago, I celebrated foodie friend The Pancake Princess's birthday at Oxheart. If you're not familiar with it, Oxheart if one of the most popular hidden restaurants in Houston, owned and operated by the one and only Chef Justin Yu and Karen Man. The restaurant is known for creatively crafting dishes made with  fresh ingredients, sourced within the state of Texas. Located in the city's warehouse district Downtown, in an industrial, yet chic building giving locals and visitors a unique dining experience. The experience will cost you around $75, and will range depending on any additions made(drinks etc.).

What I Ate:

You have the option of choosing between a choice of two menus, with one being veggie friendly. I'll be honest, as a first time visitor, I was praying their servings weren't the size of a quarter. Luckily they were actually very well portioned servings of each dish, off course you'll find yourself craving seconds. I enjoyed every bite of every dish. Everything from the

locally made clay plateware, presentation, timing and portions.

Oxheart Restaurant

Chilled "Gala" apple broth and roselle, with smoked, dried figs and "oyster" mushrooms. Tasted like Apple juice!

A lovely Rose to accompany our meal

Oxheart Restaurant

Mung bean crepe stuffed with corn and alliums, potato skins and miso, with pickled beets and burnt onion. A favorite of the night!

Oxheart Restaurant

Intermission: Wheat bread w/ butter. Not part of the tasting

Oxheart Restaurant

"Golden" Tilefish a scapecewith a basil-kombu broth, squash, salted fruits

Oxheart Restaurant

Porridge of Texas grains, vadouvan, cauliflower, and "navel" oranges. Another fave, although I can't imagine eating more than a small serving of this.

Oxheart Restaurant

"Freedom Ranger" Chicken stuffed rice and collard greens, with a jus of chicken and dried shellfish. The chicken was delicious, but the shellfish jus on the greens was "too fishy" for me.

Oxheart Restaurant

Creme Fraiche cremeux, strawberry glazed with mushroom and sorghum , pear. AAAHH, that's all!

Oxheart Restaurant In Houston, TX

Oxheart is one of the best restaurants I have ever eaten at. The husband and I got off of our flight to Houston, dropped off our bags at our hotel, and then headed to Oxheart to fill our bellies. FYI, Oxheart is the name of a carrot and does not refer to an ox’s heart.

To be honest, we weren’t crazy excited about their menu when we read it, but when we ate the food…GODDAMN. It’s a mainly vegetarian menu, which is why you can understand why my southern husband was kind of dreading our meal. But I cannot express to you, if words like ‘mung bean pancake’ and ‘porridge of grains’ are a turn off, just push those thoughts to the back of your head and ignore them. The food is fantastic, flavorful, and wonderfully unique. When you are done eating your meal, you are never going to ‘eh’ at words like ‘mung bean pancakes’ and ‘porridge of grains’ ever again.

We ended up going for their Winter 2016 menu and received the following dishes from their tasting menu:

Oxheart Restaurant

Golden Delicious apple broth with ‘French’ sorrel and ‘Oyster’ mushrooms

Oxheart Restaurant

Mung bean crepe stuffed with corn, picked roots, and burnt onion

Oxheart Restaurant

‘Golden’ Tilefish with basil-kombu broth, squash, and salted fruits

Oxheart Restaurant

‘Freedom Ranger’ chicken stuffed with rice and collard greens

Oxheart Restaurant

Muskmelon sorbet, cream cheese mousse, lemongrass, and freshly juice cucumber

*I was obsessed with this dessert, but my husband’s version, not the exact version above. I think that they substituted his cucumber juice with melon juice, and OMG. Incredible. The normal format is wonderful, but I thought his was just full of so much freaking flavor.

BTW, they have some really cool cutlery, bowls, and plating. You can check out the artisans that make them at OxHeartHouston.com.

I've been traveling for eater creating heat maps of U.S. restaurants that offer unexpected pairings with negramodelousa. I visited New York, Miami, Houston, D.C., Las Vegas, and Dallas. Here's my for Houston: oxhearthouston. The photo is of Chef Justin Yu's "carrots cooked multiple ways." I never knew carrots could have such depth of flavor: some light and herbaceous, others smoky and meaty. You can view the rest of the list on Eater.

Quick Summary

[Overall]
Oxheart is a new American restaurant located in the Warehouse District area of downtown Houston. Chef Justin Yu opened this, his first restaurant, after working previously at *17 in Houston. Reviewers liked it so far and gave it an average rating of four stars.
Food
Rather than a traditional menu, Oxheart offers a choice of two of three tasting menus nightly which each consist of four to seven courses, available with or without beverage pairings. Reviewers liked the Roast Sirloin and Mesquite-Cooked Grouper mains as well as the sides, made entirely with local produce.
Atmosphere
This is practically as small as a restaurant gets, consisting of just seven indoor tables. Reviewers said the atmosphere is cozy and intimate, a good place for a date, and the décor is simple and quaint.
Service
Reviewers said the service was professional and outstanding, as they expected with the high prices. Servers were friendly and unpretentious, and drinks were properly made.
