Max Brenner: A tale of all things chocolate
Initial impressions are of chocolate decadence. Kitschy but cool. Count with me the amount of times chocolate comes up and you'll have your fill of chocolate in a lifetime. From the chocolate martini, to the chocolate crepe, to the chocolate dessert. Did I mention the chocolate waffles and the chocolate pizza we had?
A truly once in a lifetime experience... and I mean it. It's not the bill, mind you, but if you're not a chocolate nut unlike some people I know, it wont leave your taste buds fulfilled by any measure. Presentation is great I have to admit. I enjoyed myself there but am not apt to return unless by invitation.
A Video Tour of Max Brenner with Bobby DoTube!!
Chocolate by the Bald Man is one of the most fun places to check out in New York City. If you are a lover of chocolate like myself, you will be in heaven. It is really cool that it is a restaurant where you can dine on non-chocolate food as well. The menu is really quite fun with dishes like waffle fries dusted with chili and cocoa powder. When I am in the city, I love to try things I may never find at home, that is really part of the fun of traveling.
Bobby DoTube has a fabulous video to show you around the place. I would be sure you are not viewing on an empty stomach or this will be quite painful to watch!
My peanut butter dessert (are you really shocked?)

I ordered their original hot chocolate. You can pick out from white, milk and dark as based chocolate whatever you order in hot chocolate selection which is my favorite part in this place. Staffs are amazing, so friendly and full of hospitality. I need to come back again with full of appetite next time. Thanks for sweet experience
This review is for the entrees not the desserts (which I'm sure they'll score higher on).
First off, I didn't know Max Brenner served entrees. They were pretty good! My colleagues had the Mac and Cheese with chicken which was quite good 4/5. I had the chicken and waffles. This was a mixed bag, the chicken was great (crispy and flavorful) but the waffles were flat and floppy, they might as well have put a bun. I expected the waffles to be hot and crispy or at least not floppy.
I might give them another chance, but only if I'm in the area and really hungry. It also took about 30 minutes for our food to come and this was during lunch time.
Great service and ambiance, a bit overrated
The dessert here is alright, but the service and ambiance is wonderful. Going in, you can tell its a fancy place. The waiters are always attentive and it is really packed here during the holidays. I personally believe that the place is a bit overrated, perhaps I am spoiled but I believe there are better dessert places with lower prices. Nonetheless, it is still a place you should visit at least once in your life time if you live in NYC!

Been here twice. Always crazy busy. I would
Only come here for dessert (and at this point, with a guest visiting new york for that matter). Still need to have the s'mores pizza when I am feeling decadent one day (maybe after a half marathon?! hah). My first time here I had the kitchen sink off the kids menu (love my sprinkles), second time I had the s'mores at the bar with a side of milk (way more fun). This place has a lot of hype and has a lot of tourists, but it is a fun time for kids or city first-timers/visitors.
No Breakfast? No Problem.
When I can't order an Omelette, I order Cake.
Instead of sipping a fine Cab in Napa on President's Day, I attempted to not get hit by a cab in New York as I sloshed through the yucky, mucky snow with Aish. We originally wanted to go to this crazy diner called Shopsins but it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. At least I checked online before we walked over so it wasn't a complete bust.
I suggested going to Max Brenner (http://maxbrenner.com/locations/usa/restaurant-nyc/) since we wouldn't have to wait. I made a reservation on OpenTable...just in case! We were ready to feast on Omelettes. As a side note, I already talked up this dish A LOT so we were both excited to order them!
When we arrived, it was clear a reservation wasn't necessary. If we had arrived 30 minutes later (say around noon), it would have been a different story. Better safe than sorry! We gave the server our order and were promptly SHUT DOWN. No breakfast after 11am! Even on a holiday! Instead of sulking, we made the adult decision of ordering a dessert instead.
Apparently this culture does not include breakfast after 11am!
I knew I didn't have to look at the menu! I was in the mood for the Melting Heart Truffle Heart Cake & Shake. It consists of a milk & white chocolate heart cake served with creamy vanilla ice cream, red berries and an iced milk chocolate shot.
You may be wondering: what is in the martini shaker? Melted milk chocolate of course! I drizzled it all over everything and, at one point, directly into my mouth. Whatever, it happened.
Aish went with the Banana Split Waffles, made with caramelized bananas, vanilla ice cream, sugar krispies, milk chocolate ganache and Choco-pops (little balls of chocolate).
Is that a Banana on your plate? Oh ok, thank you for clarifying.
Her dish was very tasty! The waffles were not warm in temperature - likely pre-prepared. If they were a bit warm, they would melt the ice cream, which would have been better.
Overall, I do like this place but not as much as I used to. It may be because I've gone to so many other places in NYC that are better that the novelty has worn off. I think I'm also bitter about being able to order the Omelette I really wanted - ha!
Max Brenner is a famous American Chocolatier shop located on Broadway. A shop centered around chocolate and on Broadway is destined to become a famous place, and countless people have been here at some point in their lives.
While having a full menu, the focus of this place is the dessert, centered around chocolate. Very cheap, high calorie, but basic grub for the meals. Chocolate is the complete opposite. Lots of crazy and innovative things are done with chocolate here.
For all it's appeal and being so well known, it's not for it's atmosphere, which is pretty basic and mundane. No one really seems to complain about that much, but no one really seems to compliment it either. Ho-hum.
The service here gets ripped at times, but there are glowing reviews as well. The complaints and commendations are all over the map as well. Despite plenty of reviews, it's hard to get a feel for what the service is really like.
