But those biscuits thou!
Ahh the upper west side, my old stomping grounds(well for a few years) and I even worked at the Circuit City in that area(remember when Best Buy had competition) but I never really found food that blew me away in that area until now. I went to Jacobs Pickles a few days ago and I love good southern style food(It’s so easy to mess up but when its good its freaking good)and I love biscuits! This place has great craft beers and have a revolving beer menu which I appreciate. As I’ve gotten older I don’t want to drink bud light and coors light when I go out to drink, I want a nice IPA or a really strong stout that will get my tipsy after two of them but I’m getting off topic. Lets start off with the appetizer which is 4 biscuits with various sauces for it.
Sweet baby jesus that maple butter that comes with an order of biscuits is good that it makes you want to abandon all other butter as an option. With my biscuits I decide to order a sandwich on a biscuit. Just really sticking with the theme I was going for which was glutton. The biscuit came with fried chicken, bacon, egg and cheese.
It was ridiculous with the side of grits it came with. The food is so rich that you will catch the itis(You know that feeling when your overjoyed and falling into a food coma at the same time) and wish you had a pillow and blanket with you to sleep it off.
Also they have a ridiculous amount of pickles here. I’m not really a fan of pickles but my wife loves them so I’ll take her word for it. But we can all agree that those biscuits are ridiculous!
Jacob's Pickles: UWS Brunch Hot Spot!
My friend Gabby lives Uptown and was filling me in on some of the brunch hot spots. I thought this one Jacob's Pickles looked interesting, so we planned for that.
We arrived on a Sunday at 12:45 and it was buzzing! Such a great, lively atmosphere. Even though it was an hour long wait, we decided to go for it, and, plus, Levain Bakery is right down the street.
When we got seated, we were kind of cramped at this tall table on little stools, but it was all part of the fun. We started with 4 types of Jacob's pickles: Big Dills, Hot & Sours, Sweet & Spicy Carrots and Dilly Green Beans. I liked the carrots the best, very crispy and a nice cinnamon and spicy balance. The rest of the pickles didn't do much for me to be honest, thought I loved the concept.
Now on to the comfort food because what else does anyone really want on a Saturday afternoon. Gabby got the honey fried chicken and pickles biscuit sandwich and I ordered the every so seductive mushroom gravy smothered fried chicken sandwich. Wow, the biscuits were awesome! so flaky and buttery. And the dried chicken was pretty darn good, too. They serve all the sandwiches with cute, little tins of cheesy grits. I was in such a wonderful coma after this.
I would definitely recommend this spot, such a fun lively atmosphere and fabulous homey food!

We rarely opt for specials - but these were irresistible: croque madam w fried chicken & egg; a big biscuit Reuben. Oh, and mac & cheese, of course, for @carochoe. (at Jacob’s Pickles)
The Low Down:
- Large portions! You'll probably have extra to take home with you for next day's lunch.
- Big space, plenty of seating. I came here with a group of eight and it was very easy.
- Friendly wait staff
- Pickle heaven. I recommend trying the sampling of pickles. We got to try all eight since we had a big group, but it'd be worth it to do four.
- Great beer selection. The flights are worthwhile. Although I wish the California selection has more brews from top tier micro brews.
This is a solid option in Upper West Side when you're in the mood for something sour and fried.

Jacob’s Pickles NYC
Jacob’s Pickles is the bomb diggity. Did I just show my age there? Both food and cocktail there are delicious and comforting. I don’t think I’ve had a dish there that I didn’t enjoy. I would have had more pictures to show, but I went once at nighttime, so the images are just so dark and not worth it.
I could actually go for some Jacob’s Pickles right now, but I guess I can always for some.
Sausage Gravy Smothered Chicken Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich: Well, howdy gorgeous. This enormous plate of food will have you salivated at first look. I included a bad picture, because it’s fried chicken, biscuit and a ton of wonderful gravy. I prefer dark meat, but they were really able to keep the white meat of this dish moist.
Macaroni And Cheese: The side dish was plenty for sharing, especially since we usually get other items. Cheesy and satisfying.
Everything Biscuits: I wasn’t sure what to expect when I got this dish, but basically, it was a play on the everything bagel, just in biscuit form. And it came with three butters: Apricot and parsley (eh, not my favorite), sundried tomato and spinach butter (delicious, reminded me of a cream cheese because of its consistency), and a bone marrow and lemon zest butter (enjoyed this, but maybe because in my head I saw the words bone marrow). I really hope that in the future they include actually bone marrow with their biscuits. That would be right up my alley.
St. Louis Ribs With Coffee Molasses BBQ Sauce, German Style Potato Salad, Pickle Slaw, Buttermilk Biscuit: For a rib dish that doesn’t come from a BBQ joint, this was very tasty. It didn’t taste like it was smoked, and I’m not sure if it was parboiled. Maybe they just cooked it for a while in an oven? Full of flavor and so tender. If you’re not in a fried chicken mood, this is a great alternative.
Jacob’s Pickles is a unique bar offering Southern cuisine. The food is homestyle and comforting: sausage gravy, fried chicken and biscuits, and shrimp and bacon grits were particular favorites. Patrons enjoyed the unique dessert offerings, like fried Oreos, and loved the variety of drinks available. A few diners were disappointed by the lack of healthier options available.
Jacob’s Pickles offers both indoor and outdoor seating. The line between these can be blurred: there is a huge window front which can be opened to let in the fresh air. The good food and drinks always attract a crowd, and Jacob's Pickles can get crowded quickly. As is typical for a bar, the atmosphere can get loud during peak times.
The staff was praised for striking a good balance of service, always attentive but never hovering. The drinks were always filled and empty plates were cleared quickly, and diners never felt rushed, even while occupying a table for several hours. However, a few diners had bad experiences with inexperienced staff members.
