The Cronut at Dominique Ansel

Well it only took me two years but I finally got the legendary Cronut from Dominique Ansel.  I actually got a Monday pre-order right at the start of July which meant no waiting in line and a brand new flavor of the month- Rum Caramelized Banana and Brown Sugar Ganache.

Dominique Ansel Bakery

I'm kind of obsessed with Bananas Fosters so getting the Cronut in this flavor was like a dream come true.  Thick Banana frosting layered the top with specks of real banana dotting the horizon and layers upon layers of fluffy pastry below stuffed with brown sugar ganache.

Dominique Ansel Bakery

The outside of the cronut was where the rum caramelization took place giving the sides a sticky sweet crunch with each bite.  I was honestly expecting it to be a bit more flaky like a croissant when in fact it's much more doughy and dense like a doughnut, but incredibly delicious and satisfying nonetheless.  I actually ate too many and gave myself a nice tummy ache but that's usually my M.O.  No stopping this sweet tooth.  Finally...Cronut SUCCESS!

The Ghost Guest in NYC

If you know me, you know I love sweets, and there is no shortage of those in NYC. A stop at Dominique Ansel Bakery is a must, not just for a cronut, but for pretty much anything. I tried his signature kouign amann, a flaky and caramelized pastry that is too good for words!

There isn't much that hasn't been said by mass-media and fans alike, but one thing I can mention is that the DAB brand has staying power even without the cronut, which pushed this french bakery to rock stardom. The kouign amann and madeleines are worthwhile items even without even paying any mind to the cute looking pavlovas and religieuse. There is more room in the back when the weather is nice and as you can tell when you visit, they prepare their goods from scratch, and on-site every day. There is typically a cronut line/queue outside every morning prior to opening. Skip this by joining the regular line if you're not one to buy into the cronut craze and you'll be able to place an order and receive your goods within mere minutes.

A friend recommended I try this bakery, and I passed by there on my last morning in the city. The bakery is owned by one of the most praised chefs in the country, Dominique Ansel. Ansel is known for his creation of the Cronut, which is a croissant and doughnut combination that has gotten huge praise across the world. On my morning visit, I off course ordered the cronut, and I can say it is the best thing I have ever had. I love croissants and doughnuts, but this lovely treat is beyond words. I ordered their July Cronut, Apricot Toasted Almond, and just fell in love. I'm really at a loss for words because it was the best treat I have had in a long time.

We visited this place on weekend afternoon and there was a long line to order. Cronuts were sold out already, but we enjoyed the S'mores and fresh made madeleines, and pain au chocolat. I loved all of them, especially hot fresh madeleines. The inside of the restaurant was very clouded, but they have a terrace outside and still we could have a space to eat there.

Damn you, Dominique Ansel! I wish I never heard of you or your bakery! Now, I'm forced to crave that delicious thing you've lovingly nicknamed DKA. I'm sure it's so that we uncouth Americans don't butcher the pronunciation of the insanely delicious kouign amann. I believe it's k- ween a-mon, but then again, I'm just an uncouth American... I first stopped into this shop on Friday. I had been hearing wonderful things about this place. But, what got me in here were the made-to-order madeleines they make on the weekends (starting after 3pm on Fridays). That said, the fresh, hot madeleines were awesome. I ordered a small (10 pieces) to share. These bite-sized morsels come to you straight out of the oven with a light dusting of powdered sugar. I love the crisp crunchy edges and the hint of lemon zest of the batter. Also, the scent of them wafting out of their bag make it really hard to resist not tearing right into the bag and shoving every last one of them straight into your mouth. I was nice and waited the short four block walk to meet my friend before we ate any. On a whim, I decided to order the kouign amann too. I saved this for when I got home, which was the perfect post-dinner dessert. Having never heard about kouign amann before I visited the bakery's website, I was intrigued. The DKA was a revelation in French pastry for me. I loved the crunchy, sugary exterior and the soft, almost custardy interior. It really was like no other pastry I've ever had before. I'm not one to be a "noisy" eater - one mmmmm will usually suffice - but I found myself making a noise of approval after every bite of this thing. I can't quite place what I'd describe this as a cross between - a croissant and ?... Regardless, I'm in LOVE! And, at $5.25 each for one of these bad boys, my wallet is in disgust. The cheapskate part of me winces at the thought of shelling out that kind of dough for a pastry, but my heart and stomach think it's ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY worth it! I noticed a lovely looking palmier while I was waiting for my madeleines, so that's on my list for my next visit. I'm also hoping that they make almond croissants as well, though I didn't see any by the croissant/pain au chocolate basket. But then again, I arrived at the shop near the end of the day. Also on the to-try list, the canneles. Man, I want another kouign amann right now! ::drools::

I tasted it! Yes, I know, some of you are envious right now! So let me say it in plain English: I ate a cronut! I am sure you are either wondering how I ended up with one (two in fact), maybe thanks to my blog, or thinking that I went this time at 6am to get the precious pastry after a three hours wait! It is not what happened. Before I tell you how I ended up with two cronuts, let me summarize the previous episodes.

Episode 1:
I heard about the new creation from Chef Dominique Ansel. Being a fan, I decided to try and with confidence, showed up at 11:30am on a week end to get a cronut. They are sold out (of course!). The buzz increases and the press reports long lines in front of the bakery.

Episode 2:
We decide to try again, but show up a little before 8:30am this time, the bakery opening at 9am. After three hours of wait, we are in front of the door hoping to get rewarded. Suddenly, a woman, not fearing for her life, screams "I got the last one!" . At this point, I really thought there would be a riot! Some people left, disappointed, but we decided to wait a little more to get some breakfast: a delicious Kouign Amann and a fantastic almond croissant. Were we disappointed? Sure, but it was a fun experience: the excitement of maybe getting one, talking to people in line, but also to the passerby who were wondering what we were waiting in line for. The funniest being their faces when one responded "a cronut" and they had no idea what it was.

So, now is episode 3!

My friend and blog fan Benedicte brings me two cronuts ($5 each) on Monday, cronuts that she purchased after a now famous three hour wait. I receive the precious package, hiding it from everybody around me, taking care of it as if it was a family heirloom. I carefully carry the two cronuts in my possession home and proceed with unwrapping them from the aluminum foil they are in, some of it sticking to the icing. After taking photos and eating dinner, it is time for a tasting. Jodi and I each get one, me secretly hopping she will only eat half of it...

Dominique Ansel Bakery

The first bite is divine! You get four layers in fact:
- the icing: not too sweet at all
- the outer part of the cronut, full of granulated sugar, similar to a sugar twist.
- the flaky buttery croissant like inside.
- the cream with it subtle but fantastic coconut taste (Jodi's favorite on top of that!).

Although we ate it the next day, it was...

Made to order madeleines! Some may remember these to be served at the end of a meal at Daniel (Michar Star fine dining restaurant in NYC), now they're available on a daily basis at the bakery any time of day. The distinctively shell-shaped sponge cakesare made to order, prepared within just 5 minutes. The lemony scent wafts pleasantly as the baker hands the container over; in terms of actual taste, the lemon isnt overpowering but rather a lingering afterthought. The just-crisp-enough edges complement the tenderness of the buttery cakes. Youll gobble up the first ten rather quickly, so supplement your order with more madeleines or another bakery offering.... ie eater eater_ny infatuation infatuation_nyc zagat nymag

Here it is. No, I did not line up. Delivery was nice though The flavour of the month is coffee, and they're really really sweet (from sugary crunchy outside, thick glaze and layers of custard), and is unexpectedly kind of hard and chewy. I thought it would be soft and flaky with crisp sugary caramelized exterior. I much rather have Dominique Ansel's Cannele which is great. Also tried the milk and cookie shot, frozen S'mores, Kouign Amman #DKA, and Mont Blanc. For croissant-doughnut hybrid pastry, even if it's a "wannabe" #Cronut, I prefer the Doughssant at ChikaLiciousNYC which is excellent, or her Bun-Chicka-Bun-Bun ! #FMFinNY #Doughssant #Croissant #FMFDominiqueAnsel

What better way to start an NYC trip than eating a 'chocolate chip cookie and organic milk shot' from Dominique Ansel? The milk, from Swede Farm in upstate New York, is organic and cold-infused with vanilla beans for 24 hours. The inside of the cookie shell is coated with chocolate and served warm and if you wait a bit, your milk turns into chocolate milk.

Quick Summary

[Overall]
Dominique Ansel Bakery is a bakery in the South Village area of New York City. The bakery has an average rating of four stars, with 70% of reviewers giving it a rating of four stars or above. Chef Dominique Ansel is the mastermind behind the cronut trend that swept the nation.
Food
The unique cronut is the star pastry in this bakery. A cross between a croissant and a donut, this hybrid receives shining praise from reviewers, though some mention that it seems a bit like a gimmick. Reviewers found that the selection was large, but items tend to be more expensive than other bakeries.
Atmosphere
The atmosphere at this bakery is hectic. Though the bakery is bright and neat, their products are so popular that people will line up before opening time for them. Fortunately, if you want anything besides a cronut, you can skip the long line and order.
Service
Reviewers say that the staff is mostly pleasant and efficient, but there may be some lapses in quality because of the popularity of the cronut. The good news is that the staff passes out madeleines and hot chocolate to those waiting in line.
