I had been wanting to come to Dirty French since it opened, but I wanted to do it right with a group, so I could try everything, and it took me a year to get a group reservation at a decent hour.  Finally making it to the Ludlow Hotel's hot spot, I couldn't wait to see what Major Food Group had in store.

We walked in and the vibe was awesome.. a french bistro look with a NY eighties feel.  I started out with a whiskey banana drink, the Monte Cristo, which was kind of intense, but fun to try something new.

Squash Mille FeuilleGrilled Oysters

Dirty French

There were a couple of wonderful appetizers.  I adored the curry squash mille feuille; I could not believe the texture they got with the squash and the curry sauce was so homey.  The grilled oysters were SO tasty, too, with a great herb butter sauce.  I was so thankful for the bread to soak up the sauce, too!  And the complimentary bread was really to die for as well.

Leek VinaigretteSalmon Maison

The salmon maison was also a fun balanced dish and the leek vinaigrette was fun but nothing so special.

Chicken and CrepesDirty French

Dirty FrenchDirty French

The chicken was a very fun presentation with the white meat in a bead of gravy with crepes and fun fixings, and then the dark meat served ceremoniously on the side.

Dirty French

But everyone's favorite was the meuniere trout with sesame and apricots.. wow!  It was just prepared to perfection with a delicious savory crust and perfectly melding flavors.

Short Ribe Au PoivreDirty French

We tried the short ribs au poivre and it actually tasted like sausage and was even paired with cabbage.  The brussel sprout with bacon was pretty tasty, too, but not a must order.

Baked AlaskaPineapple Banana Tartine

For dessert we tried a baked alaska and pineapple banana tartine, and the latter was to die for.  Great buttery crust and a good amount of pineapple.

This menu was really so much fun.  Some traditional french techniques with fusion from all over the world really. All the food was very tasty and indulgent, with a few major stand outs. I would definitely recommend Dirty French to anyone for a special occasion!

I sat at the bar... ambiance is nice, lots of pink and men in tuxedos. The foie gras was NOT for me. Something about it made me nauseous but my friend couldn't get enough of it. I would come back just for the lamb carpaccio though, I was practically licking the sauce off the plate. The complimentary flatbread and whipped sauce is also divine, and a nice touch. I love bar dining, so I would come back with a girlfriend, date, or heck, I would bring mom, for carpaccio, flatbread, and maybe something else off the menu!

NYC FOODIE OPENING OF THE WEEK: DIRTY FRENCH

Dirty French

The Major Food Group (Torrisi, Parm, Carbone) has now opened up this French Bistro inside the Ludlow Hotel in the Lower East Side. I stopped by last week to check it out. The room has got that bistro/brasserie feeling, the lights are dim. The food is solidly executed and delicious. I wanted to try the chicken for two, but they were sold out at 8pm. No worries, what we tasted was all satisfying.

The complimentary bread needs to be discussed here. Baked in house, served with fromage blanc, it's exceptional. Addictive. Hard to not finish it.

Dirty French

Amandine ($14), roasted clams, berber spices, is very nice. #sexy

Dirty French

The Carpaccio ($16), lamb, yogurt, pita, is one of the top dishes I've had all year. It was sublime. That lamb so thin and silky, it's a fabulous dish.

Dirty French

Tartare ($17), tuna, piri piri, and crepe indochine , is tasty as can be.

Dirty French

Bouillabaise Noire ($37) comes with octopus, rouget, and rouille. It was well-balanced in flavor, and delicious.

Dirty French

I've haven't got to New Orleans yet, but the Best beignets I've ever had are at the Dirty French. Served with a salted caramel sauce, they were crisp on the outside, and light on the inside, and downright sensational. Absolutely unbelievable. #Magical.

Dirty French

So get dirty on the LES at the Dirty French, it's one tasty mess you'll want to get into.

Dirty French: Double Take

Yes, a double-take. From that school of acting perfected by Elizabeth Montgomery and Dick York on Bewitched. Surprise; pleasure; displeasure; frown. One dinner at this restaurant from Mario Carbone and Rick Torrisi was just all over the place.

Dirty FrenchHow great to eat what may be my dish of the year, right at the end of the year. How bizarre to eat in the context of an--overall--very disappointing meal.

I have a dismal track record when it comes to writing about Carbone-Torrisi projects. This is where not being a full-time professional critic really tells. I didn't want to wait in line for the highly touted tasting menu with which Torrisi Italian Specialties opened. I wasn't prompted to hustle over to Parm for sandwiches and pasta. As for Carbone and ZZ's Clam Bar, if I was going to drop several hundred dollars on dinner, it probably wouldn't be on mammoth platters or breaded veal, or raw fish chased around the plate by mint, pomegranate, or honey mustard.

Did I have a problem with Major Food Group restaurants? Not at all: they just never really suited my needs. And then they opened French (or French-ish) and on the Lower East Side. It was time to join the party.

Dirty French
Easier said than done, of course. Reservations were scarce, and a couple of attempts to walk in--even one on Hallowe'en--got me no further than the hostess desk. The only way I was able to eat here in the end was to make a bee-line for the bar just after the doors opened one day. There were two seats open, and before I was halfway through my meal, the dining room was packed. That was by 6pm on a Monday in December.

So they don't need a review from me: but I just can't help wondering if the sheer magnetism of the place creates illusions when it comes to the food. Which is far from refined.

Dirty French
Oh, the setting? It's one large room (about the size of Café Boulud?) behind a garish pink sign on once dark-and-quiet Ludlow Street. A long bar to your left. In front of it, some unappealing booths with tables which look like they were sourced from a run-down diner. Behind that, nicer tables--but there's nothing remarkable about the room itself. It's dark--of course--and the bare white bricks reminded me of the tiling at Cherche Midi, not far away.

The bar scene is rigorously hip, and people who are known to the restaurant--or just known, full stop--are going to get more attention than you. I did ask about a table as I passed by the desk, and there was nothing--but a hostess had one for the "known" guy who followed me to the bar. It's that kind of place, and New York has always had them. The bar was comfortable, the service very good.

That sprawling piece of flatbread (it was actually quite thin and light) landed with its herbed fromage blanc just about the same time as the half dozen mixed Maine oysters I ordered. Which made for a crowded bar top, along with wine, water, and my unfinished cocktail.

Dirty French
The oysters were correct, and came with a cocktail sauce and a couple of vinaigrettes, one of which was just to vinegary. With them, I polished off a well-made blend of Irish whiskey and cumin-scented rye with Xocolatl bitters and a breath of absinthe: they call it a Muddy Water.

Then a fantastic appetizer from the fairly short menu. It strikes me as short, anyway: seven appetizers, eight mains--unless you include salads and the two large format dishes which will suit couples with the same taste (beef--priced in three figures--or chicken).

Dirty French
Described simply as "boudin," it's not the prettiest thing ever plated in a restaurant, but good eating. It had the springiness, texture, and downright funk of andouillette, the great French sausage of pig intestines never to be found in New York. And I do wonder what animal parts are bursting from this taught skin--certainly they include liver. There's some rice too, not too much, but it was hard in the twilight to see exactly what was going on.

Dirty French
The thick Creole mustard, along with the rice component, confirmed inspiration from Louisiana, but the beast was dusted with some dry (toasted?) but fragrant spices which hinted at north Africa. I was to meet them again shortly. This was one of the best things I've eaten all year, and it would make a fine centerpiece for a meal, served with some crisp pommes frites or mashed potatoes.

The lamb, not so much.

Dirty French
This was the lamb saddle boulangère; which usually means baked in an oven. Photographed in the half-light, it looks like a study in brown. But this would be brown in broad daylight too. Roughly hewn hunks of brown lamb, sitting in a brown jus. I say jus, but there's really an awful lot of warm lamb fat in that thin liquid swimming around the plate. Thinly sliced potatoes may not have started out brown, but with the juice poured over them, brown they were, and liquid-logged and soggy.

Dirty French
I've had lamb served in its own fat in Burgos and Granada, and I've never thought it served the dish well, although one is inclined to be more forgiving when it's fine and tasty baby lamb. As for how this lamb was cooked, your guess is as good as mine. It was a t-bone cut from the saddle. Some was tender, one edge was positively seared, some was chewy, some rare, some raw. There were strands of white fat which hadn't rendered. It was altogether an adventure.

And the spices returned. Either the same spices that graced the boudin, or some spices from the same mind-set, but here applied with a heavy hand. Spice--salt--fat. This was not just one of the worst dishes I've been served this year: it was a dish I'd be disappointed to serve at home; and as far as toothsome lamb goes, you'd do better at an inexpensive Greek or Turkish or Indian restaurant, and for rather less than $38. Yes, $38 for something I could cook better myself. Not that it wasn't a big helping.

At least the Cabernet Franc I was drinking had the brightness and acid to cut through the lipidity. If that's a word.

Dirty French
Dazed, I suppose, by the meals dynamics, and perhaps feeling I wouldn't be back any time soon, I ordered an unnecessary dessert: a stack of beignets, dusted with sugar, alongside a big pot of caramel sauce for dipping. Excessive, of course, but correctly done.

You can spend a lot on dinner here, and I did. Three courses, food alone, will set you back around $70. Add any kind of drink, tax, and tip, and you can see that a full meal is over $100 per head. Add some oysters, drink deeply of wine and cocktails, and your check will soar. Which means this is very expensive, even for large portions of bistro food, and even without the disastrous execution of the lamb concept.
