Del Posto RestaurantAll I say about this place is: WOW!

We came here for a company lunch. As some of you may know, I am allergic to gluten, therefore the concept of an Italian restaurant with a gluten free menu? Psst, unheard of! I hadn’t found one yet, but this place actually has gluten free items! Wow!

Initially, we were going with the prix fixe 3 course lunch. However, as my boss had been here before, she inquired if they still offered the 7 course menu. They said that they still do and we went that option instead.

We started off with a shot of pea soup, fried cheese & daikon. The aroma of the cheese was so inviting. Yum….

A bread basket was the next item. We got an extra basket for my boss & I as we both opted for the gluten free option. This was the best gluten free bread I have ever had. It’s so soft and they use rosemary with salt for flavoring. I can eat ten of these all by myself. Of course, you can’t miss out on the truffle, sweet butter and virgin oil that comes with the bread.

Del Posto Restaurant

The salad with truffled dressing was heavenly, as was the lobster salad. These salads were just amazing.

Let’s talk about the Chestnut Ravioli with Black Truffle Butter. Truthfully, I cannot believe this is gluten free. You can actually taste the chestnut paste inside of the ravioli. It is so very flavorful.

Del Posto RestaurantWe also had the Orecchiette Spicy Lamb Neck Sausage, Orange Carrots & Toasted Rye, again, I can’t believe this is all gluten free! The sausage, just like the ravioli, and pretty much everything we had, was very flavorful!

nyctalking del posto slow cooked chicken

I love pollo, so I tried the slow cooked Chicken. All I’ll say about this is that I simply don’t know how they made this chicken so tender.

Del Posto Restaurant

To close things out we had the mixed dessert. I tried a gluten free chocolate lava cake and Gelato with fruits. All fresh and delicious.

The aroma and smells of all the food at this restaurant were just so amazing.

The service here is second to none, they also have a live piano player providing some nice background music. All the waiters were extremely nice and pleasant.

My overall experience at Del Posto was just amazing, and I highly recommend you visit this place. Do note, that as they say in life, you get what you pay for, so expect to shell out some hard earned cash at this restaurant.

Italian at its finest!

    • 4.0

Solid 4 stars. This is a Michelin started place so expect Michelin starred service. Two people set every table. The servers and bartenders go the extra mile. And I basically felt like the true rockstar I am even though I as 5 drinks deep before sitting down.

The dining room is old school pomp and circumstance, but even a jaded diner like me can appreciate its awesomeness.

My boss took me to dinner here so I luckily did not have to foot the bill, but even so, your money is well spent here. Portions are such that you can split a few different entrees, the bread basket is heavenly (served with salted butter and seasoned lardo), complimentary amuse bouche and dessert and lovely, lovely pasta.

Say you just want a good meal without going through wine service and a snooty tooty server? Sit at the bar where you can order a la carte and enjoy a much more relaxed atmosphere.

Ciao, Bella!

Can't beat the prix fixe lunch

    • 5.0

Great place for a special occasion lunch. The prix fixe lunch is a great deal for upscale dining. Love, love, love the bolognese sauce. I also LOVED the truffled dressing for the simple greens-and-herbs salad. It's not all "traditional" Italian, but the extra touches are enough to keep it interesting without making the food seem too new American. (Hubby had the chicken with a cranberry conserve that we both found delightful.) Lovely surroundings. Will be back the next time we get back to NYC, for sure.

NYC FOODIE QUICK BITE: DEL POSTO

Four Star Italian awaits you at Del Posto, Mario Batali, Joe and Lidia Bastianich's temple of Italian cuisine. Del Posto is the only 4-Star rated NY Times Italian restaurant. The space is sprawling and beautiful. The service is superb, yet stiff. When I dine out my goal is to make everyone around me smile and laugh, (that is my goal in life everywhere) it took me a lot of energy to break the staff at Del Posto. Don't take this stuff so seriously people, it's just food!

That being said, the food at Del Posto, helmed by Executive Chef Mark Ladner, is quite wonderful!

The three amuses brought to our table were extraordinary. True bites of joy. I would just come here for some wine and these babies any day.

Fried calamari with spicy capers was tasty as can be. It had a unique tang to it, although it wasn't mind-blowing.

Insalata Primavera della Terra, with Sheep's Milk Ricotta Dressing, is a work of art and delicious. Superb.

Carne Cruda, with Truffled Salsa, Parmigiano-Reggiano & Wild Watercress, is the best beef tartar I've ever had. Out of this world. Everything is better with truffle!

Ricotta Pansoti, with Green and White Asparagus & Black Truffle Butter is orgasmic. Seriously, I moaned after my first bite. Unbelievable.

Young Lamb alla Romana, with Garlic Yogurt and Ceci & Swiss Chard Ragu, is succulent and interesting. This flavor combination was unique to me. You really need to be a fan of swiss chard. I didn't love this dish, but the lamb was perfectly cooked.

Desserts at Del Posto by Chef Brooks Headley are unique, ingenious, playful, and awesome.

Sfera di Caprino, Celery & Fig Agrodolce & Celery Sorbetto, is absolutely ingenious. That's right, you read that correctly- celery sorbet. I loved this dish! Fantastic.

We were also brought some sort of chocolate tree which was fun and a true treat to eat after a fantastic meal.

Del Posto Restaurant

As their website states, "Del Posto can best be described as trans-generational: an expression of the evolution of cuisines, menus, service and ambiance that have characterized the history of the Italian dining experience in this country." It's truly a fantastic restaurant. I just wish the staff smiled more. Have fun!

Lunch here was special. From the decor, to the atmosphere, impeccable service and superb food - everything was absolutely on point! My wife and I enjoyed a lunch date here which is an affordable way to experience Del Posto. We opted for the shared primi for $10 extra per person and it was totally worth it. Their menu rotates based on the season, so I'm not going to go into too much detail on the food.

I will say that I thoroughly enjoyed the pork tenderloin - it was cooked perfectly and the au jus was slurp worthy. Their handmade orecchiette was springy and chewy in the best possible way. I never enjoyed orecchiette as much as I did at Del Posto. Dessert was also top notch and their olive oil and coconut gelato are to die for. I wish I had a whole pint of their olive oil gelato! Even their simple fresh greens salad with truffled dressing was drool-inducing. You'll be hard pressed to find a bad dish here.

The hype for Del Posto has died down a bit so it should be a bit easier to get reservations here. The quality of their lunch is superb and you won't be disappointed if you choose Del Posto for a special occasion. Great times, hope to be back sometime soon!

In last week’s New York Post, Steve Cuozzo surveyed the scene on Tenth Avenue between 15th and 16th Streets, where three restaurants have opened to great fanfare in the last year — Del Posto, Morimoto, and Craftsteak — but all have had their troubles.

Craftsteak has been pummeled by the critics, after the peculiar decision to roast steaks instead of grilling or broiling them, as most diners prefer. Cuozzo reported that Craftsteak is “awaiting delivery of a broiler.” How anyone could open a steakhouse without a broiler utterly eludes me, especially when the owner is a savvy restauranteur like Tom Colliccio. About Morimoto I don’t have much to say, but it too has been mostly lambasted by the critics.

Reviews of Del Posto have been mixed. Frank Bruni awarded three stars — not the four that Mario Batali and his partners were hoping for, but better than it could have been. New York, as I recall, awarded only two, and that was on a five-star scale. Del Posto isn’t exactly hurting for business, but Cuozzo reported that a lower-priced Sunday menu has been quietly introduced. My friend and I had no trouble scoring a 6:15 p.m. table just a couple of days in advance.

Prices at Del Posto are all over the map. Some of the more ridiculously expensive items are now gone. The whole veal shank for $240 is no longer on offer, but risottos are $50–60 for two, which is ridiculous. All of the other pastas and main courses are far more reasonable. A special Sunday-only four-course menu is $49, while the chef’s tasting menu is $120 for ten courses.

Although it was the lure of Sunday bargains that brought us there, we chose the tasting menu. We were most impressed to find that a wine pairing was available for just $30. Many restaurants in Del Posto’s class would charge double that. To be sure, we got five small pours of relatively recent vintage, but the wines all worked well with the food, and at the price it was a bargain.

After an amuse-bouche of fried zucchini, our menu was as follows:

SALUMI MISTI with Erbazzone and Figs
Grilled SUMMER VEGETABLES with Ricotta di Buffala
Tocai Friulano, Bastianich 2004 Friuli

The house-cured salumi were one of the highlights of the meal, extremely fresh and tangy.

INSALATA di MARE with Prosciutto
PERCH with Truffled Green Bean Salad
Falanghina, Feudi di San Gregorio 2004 Campania

I found the seafood salad dull and rubbery, but the Perch was perfectly prepared.

GARGANELLI VERDI al Ragu Bolognese
RISOTTO with Funghi Misti
Morellino di Scansano “I Perazzi,” La Mozza 2004 Toscana

The pasta was just fine, although as my friend remarked, it was nothing she couldn’t have prepared at home. While eating the mushroom risotto, I couldn’t help but think, “This is what they charge $50 for.” It was a competent risotto, but fifty dollars? Give me a break.

Grilled RIB-EYE “Tagliata”
6-year PARMIGIANO-REGGIANO
Vespa Rosso, Bastianich 2002 Friuli

I’ve had bad luck with beef on tasting menus, which often seems a pale imitation of what the better steakhouses serve. But Del Posto’s rib-eye was first-class: wonderfully tender, and with a crisp char on the outside. The cheese course was again a bit of a dud. It’s wonderful to know that the parmigiano has been aged six years, but I found it overly sharp to the taste, and the accompaniments weren’t much help.

MELON SORBETTO
CROSTATA di Cioccolato
Moscato d’Asti “Sourgal,” Elio Perrone 2005 Piemonte

I enjoyed the melon sorbet. I must admit I’ve forgotten what the final course was like, but at this point I was so full that I felt they’d have to wheel me out of there. A generous plate of petits-fours went untouched.

The room at Del Posto is gorgeous. The tables are amply spaced. Service was friendly, but there were some glitches. After I used my fork to eat the amuse bouche, a server replaced it at my side, instead of bringing a clean one. It’s a minor point, but no four-star restaurant would do that. Later on, there was a speck of dust floating in my wine (they replaced it without complaint). Another table ordered the grilled whole fish. We watched the staff struggle to fillet it for what looked like 20 minutes. By now, Del Posto ought to have the staff who know how to fillet in their sleep.

For a couple of courses, the server’s description was mumbled to the point of being incomprehensible. Luckily we had a postcard-sized cheat sheet to look at (and which I brought home with me). Still, I had no idea that what looked like apricot slices that came with the parmigiano was in fact horseradish.

We enjoyed our meal at Del Posto — make no mistake about that. But both service and consistency have a ways to go if the restaurant aspires to four stars.

Del Posto

    • 4.5

Del Posto isn’t a four-star restaurant. You already knew that, right? Sam Sifton of The Times is the only critic to have made that claim. Of the city’s four-star restaurants, Del Posto has the fewest supporters.

Bloomberg’s Ryan Sutton gave it just two stars, which errs in the opposite direction, but Sutton recognizes an an essential truth: a four-star restaurant needs to make you say wow! Not after every bite (which would be impossible), or even every dish, but at least sometimes.

There wasn’t much wow in our meal at Del Posto, which is not a complaint, just a reflection of where Del Posto stands, when soberly assessed. Almost every dish we tried, with exceptions I’ll note later on, was extremely well prepared. A careful, competent craftsman is at work here: chef Mark Ladner. Not many Italian kitchens in New York could produce a meal like this.

But a four-star restaurant needs to be a “category killer,” and the food at Del Posto is not. It is roughly on par with the better three-star Italian restaurants, like Marea and Babbo. Del Posto, of course, differs from them stylistically, but the gustatory pleasure it delivers is about the same.

What sets Del Posto aside are the atmosphere and service. Critics may sniff that the grand dining room feels like it belongs in Vegas, and even in Italy itself one probably wouldn’t encounter such a setting. No matter. For an elegant Italian meal, there’s nothing in the city more comfortable, or more relaxing, than Del Posto.

The service, too, does a passable imitation of high-end French models, with its armies of runners, sauces poured tableside, purse stools for the ladies, and so forth.

The wine list is superb, as it is at all of the Batali–Bastianich restaurants. The sommelier steered me away from the $115 Barolo I had chosen, to another bottle he considered a better choice, that cost $10 more. Decide for yourself if that counts as upselling, when you’re already on the hook for half a grand.

But he ably performed the whole decanting ritual far too seldom encountered in these days, and his recommendation was indeed very good.

Del Posto was always very expensive, and it has gone up considerably since Sifton gave it the fourth star. Almost immediately, the à la carte menu was dropped. A five-course prix fixe (now the least expensive option) jumped from $95 to $115, the tasting menu from $125 to $145.

Reservations, which were once plentiful, are now a bit tougher to come by. Four weeks in advance, I could do no better than 6:15 p.m. on a Friday evening. They don’t rush you, though: we were there for over three hours.

Del Posto RestaurantDel Posto Restaurant

There was a trio of amuses bouches (above left). I don’t remember them individually, but they were very good. Bread service (above right) came with two spreads, the latter (on the right) made from lard (pig fat).

Del Posto RestaurantDel Posto Restaurant

On the five-course menu, which we had, each diner chooses an antipasto, a secondo, and a dessert. Of the appetizers, I was more impressed with Lidia’s Lobster Salad (above left) with tomato and celery, which had a good, spicy zing. In comparison, an Abalone Salad (above right), with grilled asparagus and ramps, tasted flat.

Del Posto RestaurantDel Posto Restaurant

I believe our first pasta was the Ricotta Pansotti (above left) with black truffles, probably the best dish of the evening. But that was offset by the evening’s only dud, a Lobster Risotto (above right), which was too soupy and over-salted.

Del Posto RestaurantDel Posto Restaurant

Both entrées struck me as uncomplicated, although skillfully prepared. I thought that Sliced Duck Breast (above left) was sliced too thin, but my friend loved the dish. I had no complaints at all with Grilled Pork (above right), served with a hearty accompaniment of smoked whey, white asparagus, fava beans, and pickled cherries.

Del Posto RestaurantDel Posto Restaurant

The desserts were superior. This being a birthday, the kitchen sent out cake, then wrapped it up for us to enjoy the next day.

Del Posto RestaurantDel Posto Restaurant

I’m afraid we didn’t take note of which desserts we ordered (above), but we loved them. They were the strongest part of our meal at Del Posto. I believe the one on the right is the Butterscotch Semifreddo.

Del Posto RestaurantDel Posto Restaurant

The evening ended in the usual blaze of petits fours (above left) and a wonderful chocolate sculpture (above right) that I felt quite guilty about not finishing.

No other Italian restaurant in New York can deliver an experience like Del Posto—assuming that its full-on embrace of unabashed luxury is your cup of tea. Many diners today find such meals oppressive. If it’s just the food you are interested in, you will eat about as well at Marea or Babbo, at Ai Fiori or Felidia, all of which offer à la carte menus that put you in much greater control over how much you want to order, and how much it will cost.

We werent’ really wowed by anything we tried. The best dishes were certainly excellent. Maybe I would give four stars if there were another one or two dishes as good as the pasta with truffles and the desserts; and if there were no duds like the lobster risotto; or flat-tasting dishes, like the abalone salad.

I’m glad that the owners, Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich, gave a four-star Italian restaurant their best shot. It is certainly much improved over our first visit, when I gave it 2½ stars. It doesn’t quite deserve four, but New York is better with Del Posto in it.

NYC: Del Posto, the Perfect Meal to Impress!

Del Posto has turned me into a believer. Bring your parents, bring your clients, bring your significant other. Basically bring anyone who you're trying to impress. Del Posto has it all: amazing Italian food, world class service and grandiose decor without being stuffy. Just let me tell you, whoever you bring here, you are all in for a treat.

Let's talk about what got me most interested in going to Del Posto in the first place, Eater's article on

The Making of a 100 Layer Lasagna

. Doesn't that sound like perfection?

Del Posto Restaurant

*drool*

Just thinking about all those layers made my head spin and I knew I had to try it ASAP. I mean, have you ever even tried making a lasagna? I'm lucky enough if I can make it up to 10 layers, let alone 100! What a work of art!

So while I was a bit hesitant to give this joint venture from two TV food celebs Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich a try

(overrated? overpriced??)

- Del Posto finally found a way to lure me in. With the promise of a bolognese braised for over 6 hours, layered between delicate sheets of pasta finished off in a pan to give it some crispy texture.

Del Posto Decor

You have the choice of doing either a lunch of dinner prix fixe. We opted to come here for lunch and was lucky to catch it while it was still $39 for 3 courses. Lunch is now priced at $49, which is still completely worth it for the quality of food and service that you get at this 1 Michelin Star establishment.

From the moment we stepped in the restaurant, we were impressed. The restaurant is spacious, with a beautiful bar on one side and the formal dining on the other. As we were seated, our server quickly pulled up a stool for my purse

(the little details right?)

, while the sommelier swiftly helped us pick out a bottle of rosé to go with our meal.

Del Posto Restaurant

Del Posto Restaurant

Del Posto Restaurant

Before I get into what we ordered, I have to call out that our meal started off with a warm toasty bread basket came with

the best airy savory lardo

that made me forget I was merely eating whipped pig fat (lol). Seriously had to stop myself from killing all the bread and getting too full before the meal even started!!

Antipasti

For our first course, we got the

Truffled Beef Carne Cruda

($15 supplement) and

Cool Lobster Salad with Burrata & Lemon Pane

($10 supplement). Both were well executed but nothing to especially call out because what REALLY blew us away came next...

Primi

I know I came for the 100 Layer Lasagna, but the dish that will make me come back to Del Posto is this amazinggggg

Orecchiette with Lamb Neck Ragu, Minted Pea Puree & Crisped Chanterelles

.

Del Posto Restaurant

This is hands down one of the most unique pasta dishes I've had in a while. The lamb neck ragu had such an interesting flavor profile that I've never had in Italian food. It was spiced similar to how the Xian province of china treats their lamb - flavored with a bit of cumin, chili and peppercorn. This was well balanced with the minted pea sauce and the spice was mellowed out by the bit of tangy cremé that was drizzled across the dish.

You guys, I will remember this dish forever because of how unique it was. I could eat 10 more plates of this and still want more.

We also ordered the

Lobster Ravioli w/ Market Squash, Sweet Corn & Lemon Butter

- lobster delicately wrapped in their house-made pasta.

Then of course we have the

100 Layer Lasgana

, which isn't on the menu for tasting during lunch so we had to place a special order for it. Since this is the reason why I came to Del Posto, we obviously had to order.

Given the hype, I don't necessarily think this dish lives up to my expectations. First, I expected the lasagna to stand 100 layers tall instead of on the side like you see in the picture here. I do appreciate that the sides are pan-seared to give some added texture. The layers of pasta is light and delicate as expected, but not a dish I'm dying to try again.

Dolci

After an amazing pasta course, we finished with two amazing desserts that helped make this meal one of the best I've had in Manhattan. We ordered

Grilled Semolina Cake w/ Poached Nectarine with Basil Gelato

and

Butterscotch Semifreddo Melon Agrumata & Crumbled Sbrisolona (is that even a word?).

Oh, did I mention that there was a live piano player who played during the entire lunch service? If that doesn't scream out -

I'm here to impress you! -

I don't know what else will ;)

When in #NYC, you must ! Thanks to my friend chfshirleychung of twentyeightoc, I tried delposto at her suggestion. Wow, what an experience! First they come table side to ask what your preferences are and then they surprise you with a custom tasting menu. Check out the truffle on action on this . So good, thanks Shirley!
