Pretty and cozy French bistro.

I went there for my friend's farewell party.
As I had been jet lug, I ordered Inion gratin soup only. But my choice was perfect. It was really good taste.

Waiters service were so sweet, they decorated a paint of my friend's child. I think this is really kids friendly restaurant.

Amélie

I found Amelie thanks to Opentable, as I was looking for a place to meet our friends Anne and Klaus who were visiting us from Denmark for brunch. We liked it so much that we decided to go back for dinner the same week.

Amélie

I do not know much about this place, except the fact that it first opened in San Francisco, but could not not notice the nautical theme from the decor, with the boat shape of the bar and the sails on the ceiling. A decor that is also very art deco, as can attest the large chandelier close to the bar.
Amélie

Menu wise, they serve classic French dishes such a duck confit or foie gras, but also some with Mediterranean influence as you will see with my brunch entree.

Amélie

As far as ambiance is concerned, brunch and dinner are totally different: the brunch was much quieter than dinner and the staff had much more time to take care of us than in the busy evening, the restaurant being crowded between people who just want to have a nice glass of wine from their large selection or some good food (or both). But don't get me wrong: the service there is quite good and makes sure you have a nice time. I would say that the only negative is the small size of the tables (so small that Jodi ended up with some wine on her bag from the table next to us, but this is another story).

There is one dish that we ate both times: the ravioles.
Amélie

Ravioles are some tiny ravioli stuffed with comte cheese that are from the South of France. It is very difficult to find them in the US and I never miss an occasion to order them whenever they are on the menu. It as a great dish, not only because of the ravioles, but also because of the amount of cheese and the nice gratiné on top. When we went for dinner, we got them with truffle, a more elegant option for a succulent dish.

I should have mentioned that the photos during dinner were a bit challenging because of the low light (that was also reddish).

For brunch, we decided to go for eggs. Jodi got the San Francisco omelet, made with mushrooms and goat cheese.

I went for the scrambled eggs with merguez (lamb sausage):
Amélie

The scrambled eggs were definitely my favorite, being perfectly cooked (I hate when eggs are overcooked and dry), the egg balancing well the sausage that is so tasty.

I also tried their snails, prepared with red wine reduction, vegetable brunoise, garlic, parsley, bread crumbs.
Amélie

I was not sure I would like it when I saw all that stuff on top of the snails, but I was wrong: it was delicious, buttery and I could not resist dipping the delicious bread that was on the table in it.

The last dish I tried (before dessert), was the duck confit. Served with fingerling potatoes, wild mushrooms and frisée, it was a splendid entrée, perfectly prepared.

Simply put, it is the best place for a night out after work, or a date night. Amèlie simply tops the list for anything you might want to look for in a favorite wine bar. If you know of any that's better, drop me a line, b/c i haven't found one yet! I've been there several times, when I venture into the Village.

It is sleek, modern, chic, with an interesting French twist and mostly importantly, very homely.

Happier Hour (5-7pm) is the catchphrase for all things wine here during happy hour. For $12, you choose from a flight of three generous wine pours and a complimentary sack of bread to start you off (if you order food). $6 by the glass. Quite affordable while being high quality. Two factors that are difficult to achieve in NYC, and for that matter, (Greenwich) Village.

If dining here isn't your thing or you have plans elsewhere, nobody will judge, the staff are perfectly cool with any direction you go You're treated with as much care if you were there for five minutes or five hours. They will still gladly fill you up with yummy French bread until you explode.

What goes well with the sacks and sacks of bread, you ask? Anything... from the wine, escargot, fromage, charcuterie, mussels, soups, salads. I've tried them all and you really can't go wrong.

Alas we have but one stomach to enjoy this wonderful bounty... I will return any chance I get when my plans take me to the Village.

Great for celebration/ happy hour/ girls night

    • 5.0

I went to there for my birthday celebration with my friends. Some of my friends reached before 7pm so ordered some plates from happy hour menu which is reasonable and tasty!

Also we ordered cheese plates... actually I can't forget some of them because the taste so milky and melted in my mouth! I don't remember which cheese unfortunately... french wines were great, all the things they served was really nice.

(There is fixed menu too. )

I also liked the waiters! They are friendly and nice that's why my day became amazing. I felt really thank you at the night!!

I want to come back here for girls night ;)

Restaurant's deco so cute!

Merci!!

You could definitely taste that it was a homemade meringue: it was crunchy on the outside and gooey in the center. I for sure recommend this dessert!

Of course, as Amelie is a wine bar, I should mention the glass of red wine I ordered: it was a Bourgogne rouge, domaine Seguin-Manuel 2013.

We really had a good time at Amelie: this is the kind of place that reminds me a bit of the wine bars in Paris. The food is great and if you love wine, they have a large selection. Would I go back? Definitely and I already know what I would eat...

Enjoy (I did)!

AMELIE #Frenchrestaurant

Finally I get to try Amelie - the French restaurant in Greenwich Village.

They serve quality Classic French food not the haute cuisine French.

Amélie

I particularly liked the mini ravioli French style with lots if cheese and some grated truffle on top:

Amélie

This dish is like a super Mac & cheese with the right cheese! The grated truffle is amply garnished on top as you can see.  I suggest a side dish of haricot vert (French greenbeans) as a side dish with it.

Amélie

Their trout cooked with wine and capers is perfectly done fresh and beautifully fried crisp skin yet moist inside.

Amélie

Above was a dish I thought would have more fish and cheese.  I didn't realize that the fish is mashed or incorporated in a mashed potato. But the compte cheese around and on top was delicious.

We decided we would like to try this place for brunch some time.

FRENCH PUB BISTRO

What is a Bistro and what is a restaurant?!

Amelie, to me is a pub bistro. They call it a Wine Bar. Yes, there is a bar counter area and tables too where you can dine.

We tried the brunch. Below is spinach with poached egg:

Amélie

Amélie

Above is their French Toast

Amélie

Eggs poached in wine served with salad is actually a new taste for us. Good flavor!

We've also had the dinner here:

Amélie

For dinner, we had a better dish - grilled Brook trout above. and Gratin Au raviole, a cheesy pasta below which is like a rich macaroni and cheese.

Amélie

Amélie

Not to forget, I ordered this. Yes it was cheese too but it had more potatoes in it mashed up to a ball. Tasty but too much carb for me.

The food is okay and the drinks are very reasonable especially during brunch on weekends.

Hand-cut steak tartare, shallots, capers, cornichons, harissa sauce, quail egg, toasted baguetteGratin de ravioles du Royans: wheat flour stuffed with Comtè & Cottage Cheese - plus truffle oil

Amélie is a modern wine lounge and bistro with a slightly retro feel to it. The interior theme is chic, borderline futuristic, and fully decked out in the color red. There are lit-up frosted red wine bottles on the walls, circular lights hanging from the ceiling, and the bar looks like a shiny lacquered red surfboard. The tables at the front of the restaurant have vintage movie theatre seats. The decor isn't bad, but the only thing I'll say is that its vibe doesn't really match the food served here...

That said, the food here is really delicious! The dishes are modern, yet authentically gourmet French bistro cuisine. It definitely exceeded my expectations. The co-owners are French, plus many of the clientele were speaking French and seemed to be regulars, so I took all of this as a good sign.

They have flights of wine (three small glasses) for $10 during Happy Hour! You can choose any wines from their huge list. Otherwise, wines were $6 by the glass for this special between 5:00pm and 7:00pm.

The menu features a variety of mostly small, shareable plates. One of the owners gave us some great suggestions, the best of which was the Raviole du Royans, which is mini cheese-stuffed ravioli from Valence in southeastern France. Amazing! Add truffle oil for an additional few dollars - totally brings it to a whole new level. I also loved the pistachio-crusted goat cheese ball with honey and onion confiture. We ordered two appetizers and one main to share since we didn't want to stuff ourselves. The portions are fairly generous, however, and the addition of baguette toast or bread for each item is deceptively filling. It was the perfect amount of food for the two of us.

I think I may have found my new happy hour spot! I'll definitely be back. It could work as a date spot, but personally I'd prefer to come with friends.

Quick Summary

[Overall]
Amélie is a wine bar featuring French food as well as brunch and dinner service. Owned by two French natives, Amélie brings a piece of Europe to Greenwich Village. A small but popular lounge, Amélie offers a well-loved Happy Hour - be sure to make reservations to guarantee a table as space becomes scarce quickly. Amélie has excellent reviews - mostly 4 and 5 stars - and its overall rating is 4.5 stars.
Food
The most talked-about aspect of Amélie's menu is the Happy Hour from 5-7pm. The Happy Hour features wine flights for $10. Diners can choose a pre-selected wine flight of 3 generous glasses of wine, or may create their own flight of wine to sample new tastes. Reviewers commend Amélie because even the most expensive wines on the menu are included in the Happy Hour offer. The food at Amélie comes in small but satisfying portions; many recommend the cheese plate as well as the Filet mignon entree with a side of crispy french fries.
Atmosphere
The atmosphere at Amélie is described as cozy, casual, and cool, with a European flair. Most reviewers say it's an ideal spot for a romantic date, as the lighting, coziness, and available window seating make for a more intimate dining experience. Others feel that the decor in the restaurant, while favorable, feels at odds with the food and theme of the lounge. Reviewers note that as Amélie is located in a busy, trendy area, it does get crowded at times and thus can sometimes be hard to have conversation.
Service
Overall, the service at Amélie is commended, with reviewers acknowledging the friendliness and knowledge of the staff and say both the waiters and bartenders are warm and hospitable. Others mention that all of the service staff are French and speak French to one another, which reviewers say adds to the atmosphere. Many reviewers suggest making reservations on OpenTable if you plan to dine at Amélie during Happy Hour or on the weekends. Others note that all credit cards except for Discover are accepted.
