Be forewarned, you might get a confused look and wind up with a regular combo when you order a secret menu item from Taco Bell. They do not actually have a standard secret menu, so going in like a big shot and asking for a "Hulk", might get you to nowheresville in a hurry. Secret menus are something you either love or hate. As customers, we love them. It gives us a chance to mix it up a little and try something new. Also, if you score a secret menu item, it's pretty cool to brag later about the mythical burrito you just slayed.

As servers, your average Taco Bell employee may just not know what you are asking for when you pop up wanting a "Superman Burrito". It always helps to have a recipe handy and a smile doesn't hurt. To be completely honest, the Taco Bell secret menu is so secret that many employees will have no idea what you are talking about. The secret menu is really just a series of substitutions that you can make. So it helps to know what you are asking for. If you get denied, be cool and try again another day. Then do your walk of defeat with one of their equally tasty combos. Come on, it's Taco Bell and everything is great! That's why they are open late, because we just can't get enough of what they are offering there.

Now, more about those recipes and secret menus. Most of the time, a secret menu is exactly that. It's not necessarily a menu that they keep under lock and key. It is just a concoction that someone has come up with that you might be able to score if you ask nicely. And as we said, a recipe doesn't hurt. We are going to give you the low down on some of the Taco Bell Secret Menu items that you may be able to acquire. We are also going to tell you what the ingredients are so that you have a better chance of slaying the mythical burrito yourself. This is our guide to Taco Bell's Secret Menu.

Taco Bell Secret Menu

Spicy Bacon Tostada

The Spicy Tostada is legit all by itself, but as everyone knows, everything's better with bacon. So let's do that.

How to order : This one is easy. Just order a Spicy Tostada and say "add bacon"

Spicy Bacon Tostada

Chicken Bacon Ranch Gordita Crunch

The Spicy Tostada is legit all by itself, but as everyone knows, everything's better with bacon. So let's do that.

How to order : Ask for a Cheesy Gordita Crunch substitute the regular shell with cooler ranch shell. Substitute meat with chicken and add bacon.

Chicken Bacon Ranch Gordita Crunch

Doritos Locos Crunch Wrap Supreme

Crunch wraps are good, but when you add Doritos Locos, it gets even better. That extra zip of flavor makes all the difference here. We have heard through the grapevine that this one is hard to come by, but some places will do it, so it's worth asking.

How to order : Ask them to break a Doritos Locos Tacos shell in half, and use that instead of the tostada shell in the crunchwrap.

The Cheesarito

This is perfect if you are looking for a small snack. We always manage to leave with a gigantic bag full of goodies when we visit TacoBell, but we understand some people just want something small. The Cheesarito is a warm soft tortilla filled with lots of gooey cheese, onions, and taco sauce. This one is a great snack, portable and easy on the pocket book.

How to order : Ask your server to take a soft shell tortilla, fill it with cheese, onions and taco sauce.

The Cheesarito

The Hulk

This one is simple and shouldn't be too hard to score. It is basically a regular bean and cheese burrito with extra guacamole. And while we can't promise that you will be transformed into the big green man after eating it, it is pretty tasty.

How to order : Simply ask for a bean and cheese burrito and ask them to add extra guacamole to it.

The Hulk

The Incredible Hulk

The Hulk is child's play compared to this one. This is the 5 layer burrito layered with guacamole instead of the usual nacho cheese sauce, and getting rid of the extra inner 6 inch tortilla shell.

How to order : Ask for the 5-layer Burrito with Guacamole instead of Nacho Cheese. Ask them to leave out the inner 6" shell and make it Fresco. You can also leave out the sour cream if you want to go healthier. Not us though, we love the sour cream on everything.

The Incredible Hulk

The Superman

If you are hungry, we mean really hungry, the Superman should be on your list of things to eat. This is a huge, indulgent delicious way to slay the hunger dragon. Strap on your comfy pants before ordering, this one is packed, stacked and delicious but won't do any favors for your skinny jeans.

How to order : Ask for a Beefy Five Layer Burrito with additional potatoes, sour cream, guacamole, and crispy tortilla strips.

The White Russian

Double Grilled Quesadilla

We love the quesadillas at Taco Bell, they are ooey gooey and delectable. But sometimes it would be great if they were just a little more crisp on the outside. That's where this comes in and this one is easy to order.

How to order : Ask your server to grill your quesadilla for twice as long as they normally do.

Double Grilled Quesadilla

Verde Sauce/ Spicy Green

Verde sauce is only available at limited locations, so it may be hard to come by, but if they do have it at your location it is fantastic. This is a spicy green chili sauce that is great on just about anything they have on the menu.

How to order : Easy peasy, just ask them if they have it.

Verde Sauce/ Spicy Green

Lava Anything

We were really bummed when this delectable sauce was discontinued. If you were too, you will be glad to know that it is coming back soon! If you love this spicy nacho cheese sauce as much as we do, but hate that it only comes on certain things, this is the answer to your dilemma.

How to order : Simply walk up to the counter or drive through and ask for "Lava Sauce" on anything from the menu. You can also request it on the side if you would rather dip it.

Bean Burrito
Now, we cannot guarantee that all of these requests will be honored. It really depends upon where you go and how you ask. Remember to be nice and bring your menu hacks with you. It also depends on what is available at the time (looking at you Lava Sauce). Normally any item can be taken out and substituted with another item of the same or lower price. So the number of possible menu hacks is limited only to your imagination. Taco Bell changes their menu fairly frequently, and some secret menu items of the past have actually made their way to the regular menu. The Enchirito was one of the most popular secret menu items until it finally got it's day in the sun on the regular menu board. The Chili Cheese Burrito was also a secret menu item, until they decided it was time to let it shine. At any rate, get out there, get creative and give these menu items a try. Come up with your own tasty substitutions and maybe you will be the proud inventor of the next mythical burrito.
