efore you know it, we will be ushering in a brand new year, and for many of us, that means resolutions. If you are like us, and plan to include a new diet plan in those resolutions, you will definitely be considering all the possible sources of extra calories. Starbucks is one of those places that can either make or break a diet. Their drinks and food menu offer some super tempting choices, that sometimes can add up to a diet disaster. But, you shouldn't avoid Starbucks completely because it is still possible to enjoy some wonderful things without compromising on your health goals. You just need to know what to order. We have looked over the menu to bring you some great diet friendly Starbucks items that will help you maintain your resolutions or long term health goals. If you are in doubt, Starbucks is great about being very forthcoming regarding the nutritional content of their menu, and all of the nutritional information is readily available online so that you can make an informed decision about what fits into your individual diet needs. Here is a short list of menu suggestions that will help you stay on the right track with your diet!

Keep It Short and Sweet:

If you still just want your very favorite drink without completely blowing your diet, you can always opt for a short cup. This is only an 8 oz. serving and will save you a lot of calorie mileage. For example; if you normally go for the Grande version of your favorite drink, you will be cutting out half of your usual calories. So, let's say your favorite is the Salted Caramel Mocha...

Salted Caramel Mocha Grande: 360 Calories, 8g of fat, 61 carbs, 280mg of sodium

Salted Caramel Mocha Short: 180 Calories, 4g of fat, 30 carbs, 140mg sodium

As you can see, just by indulging in a smaller size, we saved: 180 calories, 4g of fat, 30 carbs, and 140mg of sodium. If you drink a lot of coffee during the day, these numbers could add up to big savings in the diet game. And it is just as easy as switching to a smaller size.

The Not So Skinny On Low Fat Milk:

You may think that you are doing yourself a big favor by switching to a low fat milk alternative in your coffee. While that will save you on fat grams, you may pay for it in the long run. The less fat milk has the more sugar it contains. So, if you are also watching your sugar intake, low fat milk is probably a no no. There is also more sodium in low fat milk. So depending on your individual diet goals nonfat milk may not always the healthiest alternative.

Be Careful At The Pump:

Those syrups are certainly delicious and add that extra flavor that is so craveable. But, all syrups (minus the sugar-free versions) have 20 calories per pump, and an iced venti coffee will come with 6 pumps, grande with 4, and tall with 3 pumps. So if you are looking at ordering a Venti, you could be looking at 120 additional calories.

When you order a drink with two flavors, like a peppermint mocha, you get double the syrup, which could really start to add up quickly. The simple solution here is to just ask for fewer pumps. Try your Venti with 4 pumps and see if you notice the difference. These syrups are so sweet, we barely noticed any difference at all, and have reduced all the way down to just two pumps of syrup in the Venti, which saves us 80 calories per drink. This may seem small, but it's the little changes that can add up big time in the long run.

Sometimes you want something refreshing to serve as a little pick me up for your day. Starbucks offers so many outstanding cold beverages it's almost hard to resist the diet breakers. But you don't have to avoid Starbucks altogether, they offer some wonderful alternatives that are diet friendly and absolutely scrumptious.
